About Dead Man's Rest

1879, Golder's Rock. On a clear, moonless night in high summer, the stifling heat coils around a small town in the heartland of the Arizona Territory. Not a single lick of a breeze whistles through the dark, dusty main road, as silent as death itself.
After tracking down an old enemy for eight long years, lone bounty hunter Lee "Blackjack" McCarthy has finally pinned down his target—his eyes set only on vengeance for a past he can't forget.
But when the town mayor is ruthlessly murdered on that fateful, sweltering night, Lee's plan suddenly stops dead in its tracks.

This game was incredibly dull. As dry as the deserts in some of the background artwork. They also have a native american character who's possibly the whitest character of the whole cast. The repeated use of 'historically accurate' dialogue got incredibly grating after a while and made conversations between characters awkward and clunky.7 found this helpful
🤠 Story & Themes Dead Man’s Rest is a Wild West M/M visual novel that leans hard into moral ambiguity, consequence, and choice. You play Lee “Blackjack” McCarthy, a bounty hunter driven by vengeance, only to have his single-minded plan derailed by murder, secrets, and men who complicate everything. This is not a soft romance fantasy. It is a story about violence, guilt, survival, and what it means to choose love or revenge in a world that does not reward softness. There are five love interests and fifteen endings, and every single choice genuinely matters. Small decisions ripple outward in ways that meaningfully alter the narrative, which is still depressingly rare in the VN space. A specific warning is warranted for Bill’s route. His storyline includes nonconsensual moments and centers on a deeply damaged man who has committed serious crimes. Proceed carefully. I found his route the hardest to read, and while I am not fully sold on his “happy” ending, it is at least thematically plausible for the era if you stretch your incredulity a bit...or a lot. 🔥 M/M Content There are no explicit sex scenes, and the game does not need them. The intimacy is emotional, psychological, and…4 found this helpful
The plot is solid. The game isn't overly long with one playthrough so it goes at a good pace. I feel like there's good pay off. It's a shame you only win a kiss in the end, that's a bit tame. The art for the characters and some of the plot is good but the backgrounds sometimes are a bit rough. There's no voice acting and very little sound effects. It's bare bones but if you go in with that in mind you'll have a good time.1 found this helpful
Absolutely amazing game, 10/10, no notes. Loved every route, but especially Bill, Hollis and John.
I underestimated this game; it is 100% definitely worth it for me, but it may not be the same for everyone, but it was worth buying. I definitely underestimated how much I was going to enjoy this. I truly hope if given a chance, I would love to see a second one of Dead Man's Rest; it is absolutely amazing!
It is an interesting visual novel, but my problem is that the characters are not consistent in their "characters" (personality, driving force etc.) in all routes. Imo, John is all for justice and upholding the law in his route, and he is a shifty, lying bastard in Jed's. The killer is also a different person... And these are only the two routes I've played so far. If I can trust the guide, if you want to play Bill's route you have to unlock all the others first - but that would only make sense for me if you would get additional information of the characters and the situation in each route. But they are all different scenarios and the character motivations are just not checking out? I do not understand the justification behind this. But I really appreciate it that there is no sugar-coating in this visual novel about the issues of homosexuality back in those days. The reception was not pretty and I don't like when people lie about it or idealize it for the sake of entertainment. Not pretty, but more historically accurate than most of the similar stories I've read. Respect for this.
