Deathbloom: Chapter 1

I got no idea why this game has got so many positive reviews, my experience with it was bad. Now, this was made by a solo dev, and as much as I wana be forgiving with those kind of solo projects, the fact that is 9$ washes that away. I will start with was my biggest problem with the game, navigation. The maps are build like mazes, you can barely find your way around and get even more lost if you use the map. The map is made to be followed semi-manually I would say, it shows where you are as a circle, so, it gives you just the general area you are in, not a precise arrow or dot on the map like other games, and you gotta find out yourself where to go and in which direction you are facing in relation with the map. If you find this kind of immersion, that’s fine, it is a pro for you, but for me it felt like a GPS showing my position as a general area and only updates to another area once I manage to leave the current area. And I am not exaggerating when saying the maps/levels are built like mazes. They are filled with dead ends, rooms/zones without anything of value and barely implemented pointers which mark important rooms/zones (you know, flashing lights pointing to an important do…

I just finished Deathbloom Chapter 1. For someone who sings Vincent Lade's praises, I hadn't played it and felt it was time. Let's just say, this game did not disappoint! First of all, the story was fun and the game was very enjoyable. The best part in my opinion was the sound design. Footsteps that were not my own became my #1 dread. Hearing the sound of enemies without seeing them had me whipping my character around in circles and then just running away. And the music - it's like that was another character. Vincent did a great job of inserting sound bytes and surprises that had you terrified of what was next, Just as scary, when the developer decided not to put sound in the game. All you hear is your footsteps marching you to your doom. And the moonlight sonata quip was cute. The game was also pretty. I think it said that it was on Unity engine. The gardens outside, the inside of the house and even the deathblooms were gorgeous. For a game that came from one dev, it was a good looking game. Good and creepy indie survival horror. Didn't run very well on steam deck and the controller support isn't very good (had to do a lot of rebinding) but it was still playable. Performance and controls aside, this game was a lot of fun. Got stuck a couple times and ran into some bugs but overall definitely worth playing. I'm looking forward playing Chapter 2!
