Dungeons of Clay is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro pixel platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This shovelware platformer is painfully generic and doesn't differentiate in any meaningful ways from most of the pack. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The developers didn't design the game for modern gaming PCs, as such the game resolution caps out at 1080p, a very low resolution that became mainstream back in 2006 and became obsolete when 4K entered the mainstream in 2014. The game simply won't look right on modern gaming displays due to this failure on the part of the developers. The game features no proper level design or game/story flow/plot, as they opted to try to use samey repetitive procgen algorithms as a substitute for adding such content to the game, to avoid doing the important job of level/map design. As a result, the game doesn't actually have any content worth mentioning, just endless, boring, repetitive, soulless algorithmically generated sameyness. Developers must learn that procedural generation is not an ac…4 found this helpful
SNAPSHOT
$0.99 game with a $9.99 price tag
OVERALL - 0.99 / 10

PROS
+ unique artstyle
CONS
- painfully easy gameplay - meaningless items / stats - horrid UX
FULL REVIEW
Honestly this game seems like was released immediately after being code complete when 99% of the development time was spent on the artstyle / vibe. The artstyle, while interesting, ends up being an impediment to gameplay instead of a benefit. For example, it's really hard to tell at times what all is actually harmful to the player - are these floating orbs enemy / friendly projectiles or are they just random things flying around for no reason? Aesthetic choices aside, the UX itself is some of the worst I've seen in a long while. From knowing when ANYTHING is getting hit (friend or foe) to the game actually realizing you've finished the level there is nothing in this game that makes you feel good about playing it. I'm not even sure why the game needs to generate each level as they're all so similar and forgettable that I wouldn't have even noticed if it re-used the same one each time. On top of this, many parts of the game seem to be at a delay as if the only intent i…1 found this helpful
Woefully underrated RNG roguelite shooter with: - ok art style (I don't think they pulled off the "clay" thing and the enemies are on a cal-artsy side, but it's fine... the noise grain goes over the top, so I turned off post fx on my end); - enough variety in item drops to keep you coming back for more punishment (there are also permanent upgrades after finishing the dungeon's boss that comes up every 3 levels or so) - absolutely superb, dark ambient soundtrack that mixes together sax and couple other instruments with synth kicks & deep bass. I'm an absolute sucker for some good OST that will make any gameplay more fun. If you're into permadeath survival roguelites akin to Binding of Isaac or Spelunky - you should check this one out (the demo is also there to try out)1 found this helpful
One of the most brutal but fun games I have ever played. Drops you in, with little introduction, to a world where everything desires to bring you a swift and painful death. Death is learning, and learning is the only way to get anywhere. The game has all the info in there, in it's own cryptic ways. I can't recommend it enough. I'd buy it again.1 found this helpful
The gameplay was extremely bland and had little impact on any aspect of your runs, the graphics are certainly not pleasing, it also ran terribly slowly on my pc when other games that require more processing power to run, work fine. This game is not really worth the buy, and I got it on sale. Edit: after 100% my opinion has not changed much. Staring at the visual effects as the constant flashes on my screen burned into my eyes made me wonder why I was doing this. The difficulty was a constant swing between too easy or too hard, and every enemy in later areas had way too much HP to make fighting them fun. I get you are supposed to be stronger by then to even it out, but I have never once felt strong enough to be a match for those enemies, even on easy mode they are a slog. The concept of this game is cool, in theory its mechanics are interesting and the finger guns changing for each weapon was pretty fun, but thats it. Its good in theory but has bad execution. another issue is how little control I feel while playing the game, the only real options you have are "do I open this chest for a key" and "do I go through door 1 or 2" there is a 3rd door but thats always a basic enemy to mak…
