UPDATE: D4E has pushed out an update that fixes a few major issues I had - the new windowed mode being the biggest one! Keyboard remapping is still extremely limited for a PC release though which is stopping me from changing this to a Recommended review. Since the other issues I have are comparatively minor, if they were to add improved remap options I'd switch this to Recommended without hesitation but for now the Not Recommended rating still stands. Also fixed an error I made in the original review. ---------- Original review: First off, I'm not giving this a negative review because of the game itself. Hydlide 3 is, in my opinion, extremely overhated in the West and I think it's a genuinely good game (and also playable in English to boot). The problem is that the emulator and frontend wrapped around it are lacking basic features you'd expect from a PC release. [list][*][strike]As far as I can tell there's no way to toggle a windowed mode (borderless window fullscreen is forced)[/strike] Fixed! [*][strike]No resolution adjustment (output resolution is forced to 1080p)[/strike] Still an issue in fullscreen but Windowed Mode has a setting to adjust it in that mode. Very bare bones as a pc port, but it gets the job done. Don't listen to youtubers, the Hydlide games are great, they just played the worst versions. Rough compared to more modern games? Sure. But they still hold up/perfectly playable and are an important but overlooked part of gaming history. Hopefully this is a sign that more of D4 Enterprise's releases are head to steam.11 found this helpful
This is a straight port of the Switch EGGCONSOLE release, UI and all. There are no new added features other than the screen button at the top. The EGGCONSOLE emulator uses the keyboard as a controller, so you can't simply type like you would on a typical PC-88 emulator. Despite that, I think this is still a good way to play the game for English players mainly because you don't to set up a PC-88 emulator or do any of the configuration that comes with that. Hope Brandish comes to Steam soon too.
