This tale takes place in the land of Alefgard, a realm given shape by a goddess known as Rubiss. The hero travels the land hoping to slay the mighty Dragonlord once and for all. Along the way he meets plenty of charming characters and faces numerous fearsome foes.
Many years have passed since Alefgard was saved at the hero's hand, earning him the same title as his storied forebear. The descendants of this Erdrick and his scions founded three kingdoms that thrived in peacetime. Yet, darkness stirs once more and a sudden invasion of malicious monsters plunges the world into shadow again. All that stands between the forces of evil and their wicked ambitions is a band of young princes and princesses of Erdrick's lineage. The time has come for them to venture forth and honor their ancestor's legacy!

Explore a world filled with locales visited by the legendary hero as well as a host of new towns, castles, caves, and dungeons.
As the story progresses, you'll obtain a ship, which will allow you to traverse the seas and rivers, and broaden your horizons ever further.

The Prince of Midenhall, the game's protagonist, is joined on his quest by his cousins the Prince of Cannock, the Princess of Moonbrooke and, entirely new to this version of the game, the Princess of Cannock. These four descendants of the legendary hero, Erdrick, band together to protect the world from evil forces.

Enjoy the traditional turn-based battles the series is known for. Attack with an assembly of weapons and let loose all kinds of spells and abilities to slay the many menacing monsters.

There are two games here. First, you play as the Scion of Erdrick and Rambo your way through the world and return peace to the Kingdom. Then on the other game, play as the Scions of Erdrick and fight the enemies, befriend monsters, restore peace to the Kingdom, and become the King. Good game.1 found this helpful
note: in an inversion of the originals, this is clearly intended to be played [i]after[/i] Dragon Quest III HD-2D +the new and expanded story beats work and help the trilogy feel more cohesive +the new epilogue to DQII is excellent with an emotional close +like DQIII, these look and sound excellent. Charming renditions of Toriyama's designs. +the new Quality of Life features (esp. the map) are a life saver in a title with sprawling complex quests like DQII +-English voice acting for DQII exceeds expectations, particularly of the main cast. Avoids anime cliches the best it can. The bad guys, on the other hand... oof +-simple yet pure oldschool JRPG mechanics. Love it or hate it. You don't get nearly as many party customization options as were present in DQIII, a lot more on-rails experience where you need to focus on collecting better items or leveling up. +-unlocking the epilogue in DQII is a grindy pain in the ass but the payoff is worth it -difficulty spikes in the second half of DQI are absurd & you should expect to die without any opportunity for interaction in random 4v1 fights that pop up. This is for Dragon Quest 1. Nope. Whoever thought that it was a good idea to put those Bag O' Laughs (or Tricks) in the beginning of the game should be fired. I mean, they attack twice in a row and can heal. Plus they are super fast and always get to attack first. I'm level 11 and I can't kill one in one hit, so I am basically waiting for it to attack me, or debuff me, FOUR times in a row so I can kill it over the course of two turns. Also, the difficulty is all over the place. I'm not even that far into the game and I felt overleveled for the first dungeon, then I am on the way to find the Thief's Key and now the enemies are killing me in one hit. I mean, I get that this game is 35 years old, but I expected more from this remake. Visually, this looks great. Story is interesting and well told. Characters are fun and interesting, but they didn't do anything with the difficulty spikes. Random difficulty spikes at that...
