Evostrike

"Evostrike" is a minimalist top down RTS where some interesting design choices about unit evolution and so on were completely wasted when the developer decided not to bother with graphics at all, and didn't make any content for the game either. The RTS gameplay itself is fine and may have even gone somewhere if coupled with a quality technical implementation and meaningful level design, but that didn't happen. This looks bad compared to 1990's Flash games. This game features very lacklustre minimalist "art" for graphics instead of anything remotely contemporary. I'm sure the "developer" thought this would come across as "artistic", but it doesn't, it comes across as "really lazy". Yes, contemporary 3D graphics take a lot of time and effort to create. That doesn't mean it's okay not to bother! Developers must try to understand that gaming is a visual medium, and gamers spend a lot of money on high end gaming rigs for a reason. And that reason is not so they can look at lazy, phoned-in half efforts like this. At the time of this review I've played slightly over 30 minutes. This is obviously a game prototype - the graphics are very rudimentary. But hey! What to you want? It's free! And it only took like 150 mbytes on my hard-drive, so I can't complain. The gameplay is more engaging than I expected. You know the feeling, when you bother to try out a game and you worry it's going to waste your time, but then you find yourself still playing it and "damn I lost Schwarzenegger, Fluffy and Swedish Chef, but Joe Biden survived! Do I need to start over? Yeah I want to get more technology points to improve their firing rang!" Yeah that feeling. Gameplay loop: You have a crew that you have to control with your mouse-clicks, and they'll shoot any aliens that are attacking, but the aliens come in swarms, and it's your job to eliminate the alien bases. You can build turrets and you'll need to also build oxygen supply depots, and the aliens will swarm your turrets and crew, so sometimes you have to play "ring around the rosey" to keep their aggro while they get chewed up by your turrets. fun for the 30 minutes or so i played. but i kept encountering a bug where every time i've chosen a mission to get a new recruit, the game goes into the mission and then nothing happens. my team doesn't move, supplies don't increase, no aliens attacking. if there was a maybe recommendation, that's what i would put. edit: dev fixed the bug, changing to recommend. thanks for fixing that dev!

For a free project I like it a lot, would love to see this get fleshed out more (more lore preferably)

Neat little game. Quite high quality for a free game. Great gameplay loop, with high replayability and very very addictive. Could use more maps/events/classes/traits, but maybe in a sequel. 10/10
