About Familiars.io

what is this game?

it's a compact monster-catching fest in an online multiplayer world. It also has some optional hard stuff for people who like a challenge.

what's it like to play?

  • 1 battle = 1 levelup, and the max level is 15. I don't want to waste your time with rpg grinding
  • with only 20 Familiars in the game, you can max-out and understand all the familiars in the game within a few hours
  • ... and then you're ready for the hard stuff
  • find hidden portals to other dimensions, where you must manage your familiars' HP and your potion supply in a slew of battles against fairly smart CPU opponents
  • or, if you want, fight other players you meet in the world to test your mettle

what else is there to like?

  • it's extremely easy to pick up, play a bit, and put down
  • the only way to communicate with other players is by pressing the "howdy" button repeatedly, or running around in circles
  • I think the soundtrack is pretty nice
  • it's free btw

it's free?

Yeah this is just a hobby project made by one person. I don't need to make this my job, I just like it when people play my game lol!

Familiars.io is a compact creature-collecting RPG that takes several familiar ideas from monster-taming games and strips away much of the repetitive progression normally attached to them. Developed and published by Clay Loam, it is a deliberately small-scale online experience centered on collecting creatures, turn-based battles, exploration, optional PvP, and increasingly difficult PvE encounters. Its greatest strength is not the amount of content it offers, but how quickly it allows players to reach the interesting parts. Instead of stretching progression across dozens of hours, it encourages experimentation and makes learning the available creatures more important than endlessly increasing statistics. The progression system immediately establishes this philosophy. Winning a battle provides a level, while the maximum level is only 15. There are also just 20 Familiars to collect. These limitations could appear restrictive in a larger RPG, but here they are fundamental to the design. A player can develop and understand the complete roster within a relatively short period, making it practical to experiment with different combinations rather than becoming attached to a single overlev…
