About Girl Genius: Adventures In Castle Heterodyne

ACTION, RRRRRROMANCE (pronounced like Provence) and MAD SCIENCE!

Discover the award winning, gaslamp fantasy world of “Girl Genius™”! Experience Agatha Heterodyne’s story, as she navigates the hostile hallways, catacombs and kitchens of her ancestral home, Castle Heterodyne.

As the Lost Heir to a mad family, she must return the ancient fortress to its former glory and ascend the throne as a "True Heterodyne". Only then can she stand up to the might of the Wulfenbach Empire and other power hungry usurpers. But first, she has to contend with a corrupted and insane AI controlling the castle, its spiky death traps, and bottomless doom-pits. Not to mention the painfully pink cherry on top, Zola Heterodyne. Another lost child? Or just another villain here to steal your thunder.

Time to find out.

I bought this game primarily to throw some money in the general direction of the Foglios, whose web comic I've enjoyed for like 20 years now. The game retells the part of the story where Agatha retakes Castle Heterodyne, lovingly rendered in 3D. The gameplay is at best, perfectly adequate, as long as you don't make the mistake of playing on the Hard difficulty.

This is a surprisingly enjoyable game. Got it because I love the webcomic, but its good on its own. This is an old style game though. Aside from old graphics you'll need sharp reflexed to win unforgiving boss battles (at least on Hard difficulty) and puzzles are sometimes maddening. Btw there are very few manuals with walkthroughs on the Internet so you will have to figure out most stuff on your own :).

Developed and published by Rain Games, Girl Genius: Adventures In Castle Heterodyne is an action-adventure title that successfully transforms the beloved Girl Genius comic universe into an engaging interactive experience. Drawing inspiration from the award-winning graphic novel series, the game blends exploration, puzzle-solving, platforming, combat, and storytelling within a world overflowing with eccentric inventions, steampunk technology, and imaginative science-fiction concepts. Rather than feeling like a simple adaptation, it captures the spirit of the source material while delivering a satisfying adventure capable of standing on its own merits. The story centers on Agatha Heterodyne, a brilliant young inventor who discovers her connection to one of the most powerful and notorious families in the world. Her journey takes her to Castle Heterodyne, an enormous mechanical fortress filled with secrets, dangerous experiments, hidden passages, and malfunctioning systems. What begins as a quest to reclaim her heritage gradually evolves into a larger struggle involving rival factions, ancient mysteries, and the unpredictable intelligence that resides within the castle itself. This is a fan game with lots of love but not enough production value. The setting is great, the comic it's based on is great, the art is great, the puzzles are okay at best, the main gimmick of cubes that you transform is good but there aren't enough of them, you could have ten times the puzzles, the combat is bad and repetitive, the boss fights are actually good and challenging (they were hard for me on hard mode, though ultimately doable), but there are very few of them, the castle feels, ultimately, too small, and yet there are annoying loading times all the time, the character models are atrocious, you can barely tell them apart, they look like wii avatars, sheesh, also there's barely any interactions, although they do try to be faithful to the comic, bless their hearts, and there are silly grinding achievements that took too long after I beat the final boss. All in all it's a solid effort that ultimately falls short. I give it two out of four hats and that's just barely.

Right, Good news bad new kinda situation here - I'd ask which you'd prefer but you're currently not actually reading this as I write it. The Good news is that this is a solid game, solid mechanics, I only managed to break the game once by phasing through a cage of fried nimoths in the plunder room. Could've happened to everyone. The game keeps to the trusty humour of Girl Genius, it has tons of lore to discover and the puzzles are actually interesting, even managed to stump me for a few minutes once or twice. Really, solid game so far. Now for the bad news. HALF THE STORY IS MISSING! if you've read the comic you'll become slightly miffed at various missing cast members, you'll miss what goes on outside the castle at the same time, which would give this game a much more condensed feeling of urgency. This story should've begun all the way when Agatha enters Mechanisburg and shouldn't have ended until The Great Personal Disaster of Gilgamesh Wulfenbach. (I... THINK I might have managed to hint at it without directly saying it, hopefully people understand what I mean, then again - they ARE people.) It IS a charming little game, but it deserved to be so much much much more. I really …
