Heroes of Yore

Looking for a casual way to prove dominance amongst fabled legends? I was. Ever want to make a team of mythical villains destroy the prudish icons of old? I did. Have you ever wanted Paul Bunyan to feed Grendel flapjacks?... well, me either on this one, but it is as awesome as it sounds. This game was just what I wanted! It is a casual, easy to learn, but challenging to master. I have not fully beat this game yet, but am working on it! I will slay them all! Since this is Early Access, I am really excited to see what (or who) else the developers come up with!

Heroes of Yore is a turn-based strategy/RPG in which you put together a squad of public domain characters and fight to win in single or multiplayer mode. The basics are straightforward, and it's evident that the game aims to be user-friendly. You simply select four heroes from an ever-growing pool and engage in combat. On the left, your party, and on the right, the opponent. The battles are turn-based, which means that each side performs actions for all four heroes. Attacking is simple, just select the attack and choose a target. Because each hero only gets to perform one action, the order doesn't matter. So far, everything appears to be easy. The actual catch is in the classes. Each hero falls into one of three categories: Attackers, who deal a lot of damage but are low on health; Tanks, who have a lot of health but deal small damange; and Controllers, who are basically mages. Energy can be used by heroes to perform a variety of attacks. The more powerful an assault is, the more energy it consumes. You don't have to be concerned about this because it regenerates with each turn. Attacks can be red or blue, with red being used to attack the adversary and blue being used to suppo…

Despite only having about 30-ish minutes on this game so far, I thouroughly enjoy it! It has its charm as one of the most unique strategy RPGs I’ve ever played. It’s simplistic in nature and very casual and easy to learn. The inclusion of certain characters like Zorro and Paul Bunyan just add to the chaotic energy that is Heroes of Yore.

Don't take this as a strong recommendation. Heroes of Yore is a neat concept with some really mediocre execution. Pro: A whacky crossover adventure. My team of Rosie the Riveter, John Watson, Beowulf, and Cleopatra teaming up to fight dracula is certainly a fun kind of whacky. The sprites and voice acting are fun (though neither is especially good) Con: The writing is actively bad (not just uninspired, though it is also that) not enough UI to know what characters/abilities do, so you often just have to slot people in and figure it out. Combat is very simple, and in harder fights often comes down to luck over strategy Having a roster size approaching 100, but having many of them unlock at level 1, and having only the 4 active party members get XP, means that wanting to actually use anything other than your 4 current party members with the option to swap in the new story unlock (who unlocks on level) is very frustrating.
