The game has some cool ideas. Like the whole japanese folklore aesthetics. Or the "weapons" manifesting as followers around you. However, it's not enough to outweigh the downsides. While the aesthetics are pretty, they also come with the downside of lesser visual clarity. The background, creatures and objects tend to blend into eachother. Also, for some unknown reason, my eyes get strained. Perhaps it's the resolution. Perhaps it's the amount of details. I don't know. The player's hitbox is unclear, making it hard to properly dodge enemies and projectiles (of which there are too many). The metaprogression (via perks and new characters) is FAR too expensive. You get 7 to 10 coins per run, while every upgrade costs around 500 coins or so.

(Gorgeous) artwork aside, this is a solid, enjoyable Vampire Survivors-like game. It's not as long as VS, its systems aren't as deep, and it has a few notable gameplay differences (you can aim your projectiles! Press the A button and use the right stick!), but it's satisfying in all the ways typical of its genre. I don't really agree with the criticisms in the few extant English-language reviews here on Steam. I experienced no eyestrain playing it, though I'd love to see the game on a really big monitor. I didn't notice anything out of order re: the hitboxes. Admittedly there's a bit of a cliff as far as accumulating currency/unlocks at the outset, but it's not that bad and you can ramp up your accumulation with careful upgrade choices. One additional plus: the game hasn't crashed on me once. Basically, if you're attracted by HYAKKI YAKO Survivor's visual style, I'd say go for it. It's nothing revolutionary but it's polished and fun and you probably won't be disappointed.

Great game! Despite the reviews being so negative this is a very unique take on the VS formula. With a 6 character formation system makes for great strategy. The art style is that of classic Japanese drawing, which i truly love and find so interesting. The gameplay is what you would expect from a survivors. Survive! The game can be a grind at first but once you go at it you see that it has great potential. Perhaps with future updates and more content i can definitely say i do not regret the purchase. I have been playing for about two hours and already made it to the second chapter and it truly is a hidden gem. Looking forward to future updates and if i may even ask; A Yokai bestiary would be amazing and an auto target would be nice.

EDIT: New patch fixes (most?) all of my complaints! Hyakki Yako Survivor is now certified "crunchy satisfying survivorslike with wonderful yokai art"! I really enjoyed the demo, but I absolutely just do not enjoy playing the full game. No auto-aim, your hit box is too big, enemies shoot projectiles but you can’t tell which enemy they’re coming from and are almost impossible to dodge, and worst of all, progression is FROZEN slow. I’ve played probably 6-8 runs and can barely afford one upgrade. Gorgeous game but it needs a LOT of QoL updates to be recommendable.

This game has several bugs that the developers have not fixed, and it seems possible they never will. The main problem is that to win a stage you must find the gates, but locating them is almost impossible. I can usually only find two before time runs out, and the game ends with “Could not defeat.” The map is useless because it is blank, so navigation becomes guesswork. The only way to track where you have already been is to drop items on the ground as markers. Because of these issues, I am curious how many players have actually managed to achieve 100% completion in this game.
