About Ironclads 2: War of the Pacific
The War of the Pacific resulted from a dispute between Chile and his British ally versus Peru and his American ally over control of the nitrate-rich coastal area of the Atacama Desert. The Atacama was a rough terrain to conquer and occupy for long. It was nearly waterless and had few roads and railroads. From the beginning of the war it became clear that, to seize or defend the local nitrate resources in a difficult desert terrain, control of the sea would be the deciding factor. In the campaign of November 1879 the Peruvian Navy had lost their two most important warships. Peruvians collected money to buy new warships, guns, torpedo boats and other weapons. To maintain its naval superiority, Chileans were forced to rearm their warships with new long-barreled breech-loading rifle guns. The war goes on…
Create your fleet and army, hunt the enemy's fleet, hide your weak squadrons in protected ports until reinforcements arrive, blockade enemy trade routes, amphibious assaults and harbour sieges, struggle for dominance over the seas in turned-based strategic mode - All of these actions are possible in Ironclad 2 War of the Pacific. The real time tactical battle mode allows you to set up battles and squadron groups with their formations and management using realistic ship models and characteristics as well as advanced ballistics and weapon models. Choose your ships, increase the experience of your crews and send your squadron into the high seas. Command a battle formation and experience the power of iron and steam in a turned-based maritime strategy mode while fighting battles with a tactical real time naval simulation game.

Players appreciate the historical setting, ship variety, and strategic depth, but the game suffers from significant accessibility issues including a complete lack of tutorial or onscreen guidance, making it difficult for newcomers to understand mechanics like merchant ship movement and the complex UI. Many report substantial bugs that can render campaigns unplayable, and the overall experience feels unpolished and frustrating without prior familiarity or external resources.
This title has no in-game instructions or tutorial whatsoever. You just pick a campaign and play it, and the game is too complex for that at least for me. If you look at their forum you'll see I'm not the only one. I tried this before a couple of years ago and had the same impression but didn't leave a review - but apparently they're intending to release a sequel to this and I want to use this review to tell them that, hey, this is the 21st century and tutorials are expected now in all but the most basic of games.3 found this helpful
The UI and thinking behind the map interface is abysmal.1 found this helpful
Ironclads 2: War of the Pacific is a naval scenario set in the War of the Pacific (1879 - 1883) between Chile and Peru and Bolivia. It comes with two campaigns: Chile and Peru. I completed the two campaigns with Chile and Peru, playing Chile as more offensive and Peru as more defensive. I found Peru more challenging and having a though time against some chilean ships, specially casemate ships such as Blanco but with a good strategy it can be successfully completed easily. In the good side I would mention: (1) the variety of ships and beautiful ship models, (2) good AI, (3) a variety of options in the strategy map and ship command individually and in formations, (4) interesting history period, not previously covered in other games. In the bad side I would say: (1) the lack of custom battles, which would be a great feature to play battles with a variety of ship formations and to get familiar with each ship type as well as an interesting gameplay, (2) the lack of historical battles, which would also be a nice addition to have the opportunity to play the interesting historical scenarios the Battle of Angamos (1879) and Iquique (1879). I would really encourage developers to include…1 found this helpful
Ironclads 2: War of the Pacific is a historical naval strategy game developed by Totem Games and published by Strategy First, focusing on one of the lesser-explored military conflicts of the nineteenth century. Built around the War of the Pacific involving Chile and Peru, the game combines large-scale strategic planning with tactical naval warfare, creating an experience designed primarily for players who enjoy military simulations and historically grounded strategy systems. Rather than emphasizing cinematic action or simplified naval combat, it leans heavily into realism, fleet management, and careful operational decision-making. The historical setting becomes one of the game’s strongest defining characteristics. Taking place during the War of the Pacific, the campaign centers on control of territories and maritime dominance during a period where naval technology was rapidly evolving. Industrial advancements had begun transforming warfare, creating an era where ironclad ships, steam-powered fleets, and modern artillery systems reshaped military tactics. Ironclads 2 captures that transitional period by placing players directly into command structures where naval superiority determ…
Too much bugs. Unplayable. Do not buy, even with sales or in bundle, you will be sad and disappointed because of the false promise of entertainment. This will get you frustrated at the point you'll hope to become a game programmer and have the source code to fix this game and release it for free. I'm starting to fear this will be the same for the other titles of the Ironclad 2 saga, as with Ironclad 1 which has another campaign system but the bugs in the battle still make it unplayable (the campaign).
I have no idea what I'm doing in this game. I can't really figure out the movement for my merchant men and these seem the most important part of any turn. And the manual is not that helpful for the strategy. But it seems to me once you've played both sides and won you're probably going to be finished with the game. If its on for cheap by all means buy it. I think I paid less than 5 bucks and frankly that's all its worth
