Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 (2001)

So a fantastic game series has some major issues on pc. First lets start with the opening cutscenes dont appear correctly. Then there is the matter of no controller ports. The biggest issue I saw was the button layout. This is a fantastic franchise for the ps2 days. I hope in the future they update these issues because as of the current state, It's not worth the time and effort to get the game to play. I'm not recommending this version of the game. I do however recommend the title itself.

Bad port of controls.

I completed this game on my Steam Deck, but for the latter-half I used a keyboard and mouse combination. Getting it running on the Deck was easy (thanks to the Proton defaults) so don't worry about that unless you're playing on Windows; this is just another of those games that spreadsheet OS can't deal with because it's older than a year or so. That said, an actual review of this game is a bit tricky to write, because there's a remaster out that probably fixes a bit of the jank that's inherent in a game this old. There are one or two bugs in this version (across all builds of the game) and the controls don't translate too well in a modern way. You can get it to work and play comfortablish with some tweaking (the Steam Deck control mapping works wonders here) but there's no getting away from the fact this game is from an era when developers were still figuring out 3D worlds. While it's better than the first game (which isn't hard) it still takes a bit of getting used to. The writing and voice acting in this game do all of the heavy lifting here. As a game, it is worse than Soul Reaver 1 in every way. Although the combat is technically more varied than in SR1, it is less interesting and you are forced to fight enemies far more often, and it feels tedious and repetitive way before the halfway mark. All of the exploration and rewards for doing so that made SR1 so engaging and replayable are completely absent in the sequel. As are the diverse and interesting environments, landmarks, and locations that have been mostly replaced with some vey samey ancient temples. So, why do I recommend it? The writing and voice acting, really is doing a lot of heavy lifting.
