MoonBase Commander

This game is one of my all-time favorites, even though my playtime doesn't really reflect that. See, back in the ancient year of 2003 when I was but a wee lad of 5 years, I talked my Mom into buying Dad this game as a Christmas gift. He didn't particularly care for it, but when he let my brother and I play it, I played the HELL out of it. Not to brag too much, but I was the first person in my family to clear all 16 of the Challenge Mode scenarios with a Gold Medal. And I did it at the age of 6. As a corollary to that, the game is NOT hard to learn, though there is a good mix of skill and strategy needed to make it work. That being said, if a 6-year old can do it, there is nothing stopping you. You don't need lightning reflexes, just a good head for aiming and timing. And if you're not good at either of those, missiles and mines will see you through (at a much higher cost than basic bombs, mind you). That being said, this game is quite old. Multiplayer requires LAN (or LAN emulation, which is beyond my skill level). MoonBase Commander is the kind of game that reminds me how good old PC games were at being fun without acting like a second job. It still rules. The gameplay is simple to understand, but getting that perfect launch and sweet spotting your tether placement is way more satisfying than it has any right to be. This is the kind of game you sit down to play for a few minutes and then realize you have been at it for hours. A couple old game on new hardware warnings: there is some mouse weirdness and input lag here and there, so precision shots can occasionally turn into a misclick simulator. Not unplayable, just something to know. Also, if you click off the game, run it windowed, or start messing around on a second monitor, it can magenta frag itself into visual chaos. Fullscreen is your friend. Stay locked in. Even with that, it is absolutely worth the money. Great comfort game, great nostalgia hit, and still just plain fun. Respect my childhood. Recommended 1000/10. 5 stars. Only thing this game is missing is my childhood, OG Pop-Tarts, and Toonami playing in the background of the family living room "fat back" TV.

I watched my dad play this game 20 years ago and it's so nostalgic to be able to play it myself. Great game!
