Players consistently praise Mortal Advocate's compelling story, world-building, and character development, describing it as an engaging narrative-driven experience that kept them invested through multiple playthroughs. However, several technical issues detract from the experience, including menu bugs (particularly getting stuck in graphics settings), collision detection problems with scenery, occasional cutscene skipping, and rare glitches that sometimes require save reloading, though most players feel the strong story is worth working through these minor polish issues for a one-person project
I'm about halfway through my second playthrough (despite some of the really long exposition and dialogue scenes). The story in the game was intoxicating and got me through any of the gripes or issues I had with the gameplay. You have to manage your expectations when playing a game with a single developer, but I was blown away by how well this game held together despite that fact. That being said, main problems I encountered were with the menus, primarily if you go into the "Graphics Settings" you can't get back into the game, and originally when I launched there was no save button- but later the save/load worked okay. Sometimes there were collision box errors, having to like jankily work your way over a few bumps and through some doors. It can be a little hard to tell what you're supposed to interact with at times. But the payoff for going around and touching everything feels rewarding. I was laughing along while playing, thinking about the writing of the dialogue, the pacing of the story beats, etc. I felt like I got a really good taste of what the world had to offer without needing a break from the game. I really love these characters, and I really didn't know what to expect.2 found this helpful
Dark and very intriguing.1 found this helpful
I loved this game from start to finish, the story-telling and world building are top-notch and I truly didn't expect to become THIS attached to the characters. Legitimately kept putting off this review because I kept getting distracting thinking "aw man I love Zegg" and forgetting to write anything else. But also: man, I love Zegg and I think you will too. I'd definitely recommend this to folks who like dystopias and the horror that comes with them, detailed magic systems, character-driven stories, or if you just really like zombies (u kno who u are). There were a few technical issues I ran into, but pretty minimal considering this was a 1-person effort. - Most significantly, if I hit escape to leave the window during a cut scene the game would skip the cut scene entirely. Unsure if this is still the case! - Handful of typos, nothing super important that I can remember though. - There's an easter egg involving super glue that I couldn't get because the game wouldn't load an important item (the glu) ((Speaking of easter eggs, I have it on good authority this game is packed with secrets ;) ))1 found this helpful
I really enjoyed playing Mortal Advocate! The world created is rich and intriguing and the characters are all very well developed. There are couple minor issues, like getting caught on the scenery occasionally, but nothing detracted from my enjoyment of the game. I'm even planning to play through again to see if I missed anything.1 found this helpful
Mortal Advocate – A Revolution and A Revelation
An incredibly charming indie adventure game that blends existentialism and interpersonal relationships in a witty and smart way. This game includes a lot of the charm of point-and-click adventure games, while also feeling like a lovingly-written visual novel, except you actually get to walk and explore, rather than being static menus and dialogue only. It took me just over 10 hours to complete, and there are some minor details that are possible to miss, so it can be worth replaying for the sake of both picking up on details but also to experience the story again. Absolutely worth the price of admission, and is a unique and beautiful experience for those into character development and deeper questions about people and the universe. Bonus points for having adorable animals that you can even praise.
Story/Writing
My favorite part of the game ; the story has a concise path through a detective mystery that turns out to be MUCH more than it seems, and blooms into a tale of two beings learning who and what they truly are, and what they value most from life. Without becoming convoluted or confusing, topics s…1 found this helpful
Mortal Advocate is an ambitious first project from FungalWorks. An interactive visual novel with a fascinating world and characters and a striking aesthetic style. The gameplay is simple first person 3D exploration that let's the story take center stage. While progress is very direct, taking time to explore each scene expands on the world and story in interesting ways. This is all helped by a striking artistic style that creates a haunting atmosphere that can be oppressive in one scene and quite lovely in another as the story unfolds. The game is not without a few glitches and bugs, some than can require you to reload a save a couple of times, however I feel that the story is strong enough to be worth pushing through to see how it all comes together. I would absolutely recommend playing Mortal Advocate.1 found this helpful
