About ONINAKI

Reincarnation is the foundation of our way of life. We celebrate the lives we’ve been given, and offer up prayers for the next.

It is grief of death which shackles the living, and causes the dead to stray. Indeed, there is no greater affront to reincarnation.

So do we turn our grief to joy as we send off the dead.

But the souls of those who held back their tears in life still need salvation in death. A duty that falls to the Watchers.

Their task is to guide the wandering souls known as the Lost, and serve as keepers of the Living World and the Beyond.

The Watchers sever the bonds that tie the Lost to this world, and send them on to the next. They navigate the emotions of the living and the dead. They prize life above all else.

This is the story of one Watcher.

This game is not very good, and it's not very fun. Some people say that the story is the worst aspect. Those people are correct. It's a real downer. It's not "dark" or "depressing," which I could handle and likely enjoy. The story is minimal, low energy, and a downer. Some people say the combat is the worst aspect. Those people are correct. The combat is slow, really slow. Your attacks come out fast, but recovery frames can feel like they last forever. Enemies are fairly slow, but their attacks come out with no warning. Your animations feel sluggish, while enemy animations feel glitchy (what is with the wings on the butterfly-type enemies?). Some people say the PC port is the worst aspect. Those people are correct. I never really used the Steam Controller Configurator until this game. No game's forced me to map keyboard buttons to a controller until this one, because I couldn't switch Daemons with my default right stick controls. Some people say the keyboard/mouse controls are the worst aspect. Those people are correct. The game doesn't use the mouse at all. It expects you to hit J and K instead of just using left and right mouse buttons.
Co…

Game gets a bad rap for what it isn't. Just plug in a controller and have a chill time. Definitely recommend the reincarnation mod (on github) if you prefer a challenge. Optimal party:
- Zephyr (lead) | Rest for party passives - Zaav - Izana - Lucika/Jex Zaav/Izana are core to enable infinite manifest duration. The other 2 slots are up to personal preference.
Oninaki, developed by Tokyo RPG Factory and published by Square Enix, is a contemplative action RPG that dives deeply into themes of life, death, and the cycles that connect them. Players follow the story of Kagachi, a young Watcher whose duty is to guide wandering souls to their next reincarnation. The narrative explores heavy emotional and philosophical themes, balancing moments of intimate character development with broader reflections on the nature of existence. From the outset, the game establishes a somber yet compelling tone, creating an experience that is as much about emotional resonance as it is about gameplay. The combat system in Oninaki is one of its most distinctive features. Players can summon and switch between a variety of Daemons, each granting unique weapons and skills. This real-time combat mechanic encourages strategic thinking and adaptability, as different enemies and situations require different approaches. While the combat offers fluidity and variety initially, some players may find it becomes somewhat repetitive due to recurring enemy types and level layouts. Despite this, the system provides a satisfying sense of empowerment and flexibility, allowing pla…

Decent story, but the gameplay is super repetitive and the combat is way too simple.

I played the previous two titles from these developers (Lost Sphear and I Am Setsuna), so I did come into this with some expectations. Overall, I'd say it's a pretty good game, somewhere between LS and IAS. The story at first can be a little bit all over the place, but it sort of ties it all together in the end, with an unexpected plot twist which was a pleasant surprise. The combat is very nice, you get a variety of characters with different skill sets, so you can find the one you prefer and enjoy more. The one thing that did disappoint me, especially coming from the developers of I Am Setsuna, was the music. I mean, it was practically not even there, for the most part. I remember a boss or two that had a nice soundtrack, and the manifestation mechanic also had a nice soundtrack, but other than that, it felt like I went through most of the game with no music. Overall, I'd say it's a solid 7.5/10
