Orbital Mechanics

"Orbital Mechanics" is basically Planetary Annihilation with almost all the gameplay removed... a simple tech demo scoped game, you roll a tank thing around little 3D planets, shoot stuff and jump between them. This could have been the foundation for a much bigger, richer game, but as it stands it's more of a bare bones proof of concept. The graphics in this game are really quite good, which at least makes the game look more appealing. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. On the matter of pricing and value for gamers, most "free" games on Steam aren't really free. There's often nasty mobile app cash shops, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of shady pricing schemes that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Orbital Mechanics is a small-scale science-fiction action game that takes a straightforward third-person shooter concept and gives it an unusual setting built around tiny spherical asteroids. Developed and published by Brock Billings, the game places players in control of a mining robot whose routine search for valuable power-crystals quickly becomes dangerous when hostile crystal pirates arrive to claim the resources for themselves. Instead of expanding this premise into a complicated space epic, Orbital Mechanics concentrates on a compact combination of shooting, resource gathering, and movement between asteroids. Its relatively narrow scope is immediately apparent, but the unusual environment gives the experience a personality that separates it from more conventional independent shooters. Traversal is arguably the game's most interesting feature. The asteroid field is composed of small celestial bodies that act as individual platforms and combat areas, forcing the player to think about movement in a different way from navigating an ordinary flat environment.
