Paper Perjury

This game is amazing. The music is pretty good. The game is a treat to look at. The backgrounds are full of detail and the characters are well designed. I like the animation as well. There are some points I don't really like it. Notably Sofie's jumping sprite and the reuse of Bill's sprite on fineman. The handbag looks out of place, it would look much better if there were some inbetween frames or the bag didn't swing away from her body. The story is extremely interesting. In both the first five cases and the sixth case. There is a shocking number of twists and turns. Now, I do not think case six was handled perfectly, the game still doesn't answer what the movements of the brothers really were, but it is over still well put together. The thing I like the most about this game is how it humanizes everyone including the villains. Surprisingly everyone is present in the credits except the final culprit. It is refreshing since Ace Attorney has a bad habit of forgetting to flesh out its villains and seems to treat them as heartless monsters when there could be more than that. It's nice. It's like if Ace Attorney was about pre-trial investigation and everybody wasn't a complete idiot.

A reviewer's duty is to simultaneously assist the artist (any media is art, so are games) on the one hand by pointing aspects of their work that could improve (those that can only be fully noticed when the product massively available) and any potentials consumers by informing them before they spend their money what they will get with the purchase . Yet, above all, in this digital era, I believe a review must be sincere, with warmth, and thus should not be afraid to express subjectivities. With that out of the way, I want to start by telling that I first noticed this game in 2024-September, via Youtube algorithm to the trailer. I honestly didn't think much of the product . The comments already pointed out the similarities with Ace Attorney (from now on AA), with the breakdowns and the main gameplay mechanic of reading to find contradictions. But the design style was definitely different, with a 2D that's typical from a western production in the late 2010s and while the trailer did show breakdowns, they were compared to AA much more contained. I'm 4 cases in and I really do like it. It's very clearly Ace Attorney inspired (which rocks cause I need so much more Ace Attorney), but it is quite short. Probably half my hours were from leaving the game open while I did other things. Still very worth it.

Great game! Its a fun take on a point and click and detective game bundled into one. Some of the puzzles can get a little tricky, but they are fun to figure out and solve. The pixel art is very well done and its really surprising the amount of content and animation in this one. Worth the price for sure!
