About Paths Taken

Emory is an 18 year old noble of Sharan, a wealthy kingdom made even wealthier by Emory's father, an entrepreneur and prolific business man who is the king's aid in finances. As such, Emory is best friends with the king's only child, Cordelian, a 19 year old boy who's being prepped to take over the kingdom. Along with Cordelian, Emory spends their days with Lisia, their personal maid, and Marco, Cordelian's butler. However, Emory's daily, carefree life gets a small wrench in it when they finally meets the princess of a neighboring, rival country, and finds out that Cordelian and her are engaged...

Paths Taken is a dating sim visual novel where you play as Emory, a noble of a country on the brink of war. This game is a more relaxed day-to-day experience though, and doesn't feature any action scenes. How will you spend your time? Who will you chose to walk with along your path?

Sooo... It's more of a neutral rewiev than good one. The game works, is pretty well made. Yeah, the music sometimes cuts off where it should loop. The arts weren't really my cup of tea, dunno, the characters looked weird. I was sometimes referred to as Sir choosing female character, also once as original character name from author, not the one I chose - it should be an easy fix? But the story is where this game lost me. It was slow paced, low key boring at times, and just not my cup of tea. There was a lot of lore dropped seamingly for no reason other than to... have it there. Yeah, there's war, there's the missing dad... But either it was the way the story was told or it was unnecessary in the story of this theme but I felt like we could cut away half of the dialogue and still get the same result.

Yes, it's free, but that's about what it's worth. Too many inconsistencies ruin an already average story. For example: they live in a modern world with cameras, but have never seen a picture of a princess from a nearby country. And yet, at the ball you have so many photographers the MC has to sneak to avoid paparazzi. Another. A character says she's got an allergy to flowers. That doesn't prevent her from working in a... flower shop. Or a well known character in the game's world is never recognized, even when they work twice for the same employer under two different names. No, it's too much to feel interested. I continued with the other routes, same level.

Paths Taken is a heartfelt and beautifully written story about choices, relationships, and personal growth. I really enjoyed how naturally the characters develop and how each decision feels meaningful, shaping the story in subtle but impactful ways. The art and music create a warm, immersive atmosphere that makes it easy to get attached to the world and its people. The pacing can feel a little uneven at times, and I wished some routes were explored more deeply, but overall it’s a touching and memorable experience. It’s a game that lingers with you, thoughtful, emotional, and worth every moment. 🌿✨

"Paths Taken" is not a game, it's an e-book that's been dumped on Steam masquerading as a game. As a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature any notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which poses the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". When someone hoping to become an author is unable to get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam, under the guise of a game. This is an LGBTQIA+ friendly e-book about, you guessed it, the author and his imaginary boyfriend. As usual, the writing is junior high school anime club dropout fan-fiction cringe, a suitable substitute for Ipecac Syrup, guaranteed to make you hurl. In this trash e-book, the author's imaginary boyfriend is an underaged looking (but totally over 18 guys trust me) prince of a magical kingdom. Make of that what you will. Trust me, this is pure, utter cringe. This was slapped together with the godawful Ren'Py visual novel construction kit... enabling terrible authors to publish books as if they were games when otherwise we might have been spared…
