Rhapsody III: Memories of Marl Kingdom

Hello Friends, Today I will review the game Rhapsody 3: Memories of Marl Kingdom. This is the third game in this series. It has story elements from the first and second games in it from different perspectives. For example, a player may play a similar scenario found in the second game, but from a minion or a evil character that is playable. This game changes the formula again from the second game. In this game, the fighting is done in rows of players. This allows for different combination of characters and monsters to fight enemies. This also can entail using strategy. For example, using ice elemental enemies against fire enemies and light against dark. This allows the player to have 16 character at once on the field to fight enemies. The fighting is done usually with the main character, and the row characters usually do their own moves automatically. The front row character can do combo and can do specials with the row characters also. The music is back in this version, but like the previous game, it is untranslated and only has English subtitles. Also, the leveling in this game may require grinding to fight certain bosses if the player wants to have certain characters in their …

The best combat in the trilogy. It's also great seeing the evolution of Nippon Ichi game by game, since by Rhapsody 3 much of the formula resembles La Pucelle Tactics. A pretty fun RPG, mostly for established fans.

[SPOILER-FREE REVIEW] I played Rhapsody 1 and 2, and this latest game left me satisfied. This game feels more like a "complement" to the story developed in Rhapsody 1 and 2. If you haven't played Rhapsody 1 and 2, you wouldn't understand Rhapsody 3. Chapter 1: A filler story for Rhapsody 1, it doesn't add much. Chapter 2: A continuation of the ending of Rhapsody 2. Chapter 3: A filler story about Marjoly, it doesn't add much. Chapter 4: A supplementary story about Akurjo, set at the prologue of Rhapsody 2. Chapter 5: The prequel to Rhapsody 1, featuring Cornet's mother (Cherie). This is the most worthwhile story because it explains many plot holes. Chapter 6: The Final Battle. It doesn't add much to the story; it's more of a (very exciting) fan service. It's a moderately satisfying conclusion. Battle System: It's a turn-based RPG, but you control an "army" of 16 characters. Of these, the four front-line characters are the leaders, and the remaining 12 are support characters. You can't just casually assign characters, as this will positively or negatively affect the leaders. You can recruit monsters to fight as allies. The conclusion to Rhapsody. Never have I experienced an RPG Trilogy like this before, the closest we have to this is the .hack games where they all played as one game that bled into one another, but this pre-dates that! What an inspired choice, I love this Trilogy and I was sorry it was over. However. This also plays very much like Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, in that it's episodic. It's unique small gameplay experiences and then a final arc at the end and so it doesn't really feel like a game, rather than finishing off some plot beats from both Rhapsody I and II.
