Slitterhead

It a feels a little bit like a PS2&PS3 japanese game in some aspects. However, I'm playing it on Nightmare and I'm loving it so far.

I was really drawn in by the Silent Hill creator’s name and the trailer, which had a strong mix of The Thing and Kiseiju vibes (I’m a big fan of Kiseiju). But after playing it, I’ve got to say I’m pretty disappointed. The game clearly has potential, but it really shows that it was made on a low budget. Every single character, including the protagonist, doesn’t actually talk—they just hum the entire time. All the human character models look super uncanny valley. I didn’t need to be scared of the monsters; the “normal” humans were already creepy enough. The combat is probably the best part of the game, but even that could’ve used a lot more polish. It feels clunky, and hard mode doesn’t make things more challenging in a good way—it just makes everything more annoying. Enemies get more irritating, and your awkward combat sticks around longer, so it ends up feeling more like a chore than something fun. The lore also doesn’t really make sense. The protagonist has this ability to “lure” people, so when you run into a monster alone in a dark alley, a cutscene end and suddenly you see five civilians just spawn next to you from thin air. This game is good but not great. It has unique gameplay and characters but it is plagued by repetitive missions and poor or non-existing voice work.

I genuinely love everything about Slitterhead. The core mechanics, the storytelling, the world, etc. It's a throwback to the late 90s or early 2000s where the first game in a series was a creative taste of what a series could grow into. Yet... the aftertaste is pure 2020s. Bitter, generic, and disappointing. So, ultimately, I don't know how I feel about this game, so I sure as heck can't recommend yes or no with any confidence. Slitterhead are alien monsters that feed on the brains of human beings. You take on the role of a disembodied spirit, jumping from host to host to kill them. This is the core mechanic, jumping into one body... attack an enemy, leap into a random civilian off to the side and strike from another angle. Combine this with a really cool parry system, a fun open world-style "Pursuit" (AKA movie chase sequence) that fully utilizes the possession system, mechanically unique main characters called "Rarities" that act as your main characters, great monster designs, etc. This nugget of a core is great. This game was really mediocre. it wasn't bad or great just meh. At the start the combat felt really fun and interesting but after parrying you 100th penis monster it just gets really dull. It's also lazy how they recycle weapons amongst rarities just wish it was a little bit more to do. Do i recommend this game? if it's on heavy sale then sure but it drags on.

This game was a real mixed bag with things I admired about it but more things I didn't. The writing and environments are interesting at times, but the gameplay was an unsatisfying and disjointed hodgepodge. The themes didn't end up landing for me in any interesting ways so I can't really recommend it.
