Target Audience: Um..... Summary: Look, I hate writing reviews like this. But Side Quest is the blandest of action games that needs to understand where it fails: it's an side-scrolling action game that doesn't execute anything well, and doesn't have any appeal. The gameplay is basic in the worse ways: as the KISS principle (keep it simple stupid) is misused in the wrong way: it's so basic, it's boring. You can get combat variety in several ways, you don't need combos even if you use level design/enemy design/visual flair correctly, but Side Quest does none of those. The game has shown you exactly what it has to offer within the first 15 minutes (for the most part), and really doesn't take it from there. It's also a technical mess: art assets are inconsistent and the game has portions where the hit detection doesn't work at all. Look, I don't like being brutal with new developers like this, but in order for them to improve, you have to be. And needless to say, Side Quest doesn't do the job at any level: it fails to get the attention. For games where you play a chef I'll take burgertime over this any day. The idea and story are pretty good but the controls are really awkward. The graphics are all over the place. Some characters and environments are really nice and others look like they are from a first generation iPhone game.

Fortunately, the game is short, so the wonky combat and issues will not be a major source of frustration for you. The story's main hero is a chef who only wants to deliver his food, but a wizard quickly draws him into a larger mission. He equips him with magnificent armor and weapons and sends him on a rescue mission. Despite the 3D graphics and freedom-like aspect, the game lives up to its name. Although the hero can only walk left or right, he can do it on two distinct planes. This is vital because there is no jump button or shield to protect yourself. Switching planes function similarly to a dodge because they allow you to avoid projectiles. Naturally, opponents can change planes as well. Each stage is straightforward and takes place in a distinct setting. You begin in the castle dungeon and proceed to the graveyard, forest, and several other locations. A stage may have a secondary challenge indicated by a large door. Beating it usually gets you a new piece of equipment. The first, for example, provides you with a magical staff capable of firing projectiles. You can ignore these tasks, but it will make the game more difficult because you will miss better gear. Enemies in you…

Cool spin on a dungeon crawler if you can even call it that. More like a beat em up almost. Graphics are kinda ♥♥♥♥♥♥ but they have some charm. Unfortunately it has too many bugs to recommend.

There is close to nothing good or ok about the game, but a lot of bad things. Controls are sometimes unresponsive. I can use my controlller, but shown promts are for the keyboard. I could live with the "story" (spoiler: the story is "rescue the princess") if it was written in a better way or if the gameplay would be any kind of fun. But it isnt. The idea about a side character becoming a hero sounded good, the execution isnt. I just cant recommend the game.
