About Siege of Treboulain

Rule a magical city and defend it from an enemy army! In this epic fantasy game of swordfights, warfare, politics, and romance, can you prove worthy of your throne?

The Siege of Treboulain is a 260,000-word interactive novel by Jed Herne. It’s entirely text-based, without graphics or sound effects, and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

You’re the young ruler of a magical city, trying to lead your people to greatness. When a ruthless army besieges Treboulain, you must martial your troops, rally your people, and defend your city!

Will you take to the walls yourself, using your magic and skill with a sword to inspire your soldiers? Or will you command the defense from a distance, using your sharp tactical mind? Should you fill the moat with traps, train elite magicians, or recruit mercenaries for a surprise attack? With rival politicians attempting to usurp you, what will you sacrifice to maintain order?

Manage your population’s morale – and your dwindling resources – with wise leadership. Expose deadly conspiracies, find love and friendship amidst the turmoil, and prove your worthiness to rule.

Can you save your city against overwhelming odds – and forge a mighty legend?

✦ AI summary

Players praise this choice-driven narrative game for its engaging storytelling, meaningful character development, and strategic decision-making that feels impactful rather than punishing. Common complaints center on the story feeling somewhat short despite its quality, some characters being poorly received, and certain choice systems feeling oversimplified or limited—players want more complex multi-layered decisions and the ability to pursue multiple actions simultaneously rather than being locked into singular choices.

Curse my scheming cousin who who vies for my throne, who rubs his grubby hands when I have a misstep, who scowls when the masses adore me.

Yeah, so for a choice game, these are some of the worst choices, perhaps in anything ever. Cringy, nonsensical, and a two-year-old could provide more rational options. It seems like nothing you do is the right choice, no matter what you pick. Literally, one of the prompts is "offend x, offend y, or offend z" and there's nothing else to it. I'm a big fan of Jed on YouTube, but I think books are more his thing than interactive stories. It's not fun to play a game where every outcome path is similar to the following: "you're one of few people outside of this religious order who can perform this magic, so you should give a demonstration" -> *chooses to give demonstration* -> "Actually, you failed because you suck at it, and everyone laughs and walks away. I know we told you otherwise, but oh well, should've known better."

Generally an enjoyable and challenging game. I follow the author, Jed Hern on youtube and I value his instructions. One fatal flaw - the 'Gary-Sue' type character - got no Yearning for that one - a turd that won't wipe off.

I give it a 10/10. Good choices great character development. You dont feel like your a punished or not playing the character you make. the support cast is good, and the enemy has a motive. All in all the systems are great, and it reads well. Worth the price looking forward to more from this author.

A very captivating story - played through it several times, enjoying every single playthrough. Although, i must say it feels... somewhat short for a novel? By the end i was still craving for more - although, perhaps, it is more of a compliment to the writers rather than an actual complaint.
