This review is based on 100% completion and 11.8 hours of gameplay.
Recommendation:
Would I recommend this game? I would. This is a really lovely, charming, narratively driven experience. If you’re looking to relax and experience a different culture, this is a great option to pick up. That said, because it is so heavily story-driven, it won’t be for everyone. But if that sounds like your kind of thing, it’s definitely worth it. First off, I’m a big fan of games like this that focus on sharing culture. It’s a really interesting way to explore and learn about different traditions or mythologies. Making it interactive, while also telling a compelling story, is a great way to keep people engaged while still getting that cultural message across. As for the game itself, the graphics are quite simple and nothing too special on the surface, but they actually work really well for what the game is trying to do. The lighting and layering do a lot of heavy lifting and really help elevate the overall look. It ends up being part of the charm. It’s a good example of how you don’t need top-tier, ultra-detailed graphics to create something that looks and feels good, especially wh…

Sadly can't recommend this title, it's another I wish I liked but the gameplay overall was just not that enjoyable. The Sámi legends were great, and overall the story was decent. The voice work was also quite enjoyable, I liked everyone's voices and it wasn't too difficult to follow along with the subtitles. Graphics was fine, some areas were really beautiful and detailed. The problem is that a lot of the game is VERY dark, especially at night (and the story will make you do some segments at night), or in caves, or in the final area with a lot of smoke. Holding onto the drum button will help but it's just not enough. I'm sensitive to too much bright light but I also struggle with vision when it's too dark. This is absolutely in the too dark category for upwards of a third of the whole game. Gameplay is running around exploration style with some platforming, at least until you get your powers. Using these powers aren't bad on the ground, but they're rather difficult to execute well in the air. You'll very often fall to your death because you have to hit just so many buttons, without the easy ability to manipulate the camera while you're moving quickly. It's also eas…

Not recommended - it is terribly unoptimized and the gameplay is of the dull follow-the-trail sort. The voice acting is kind of basic, kills the adventuring momentum and frankly is worse than nothing. It never rises above the boredom and fails to provide a reason for the player to care. It is just another example about how hard cultural games tend to blow chunks. There are no options for lowering the resolution bellow 720p. It is dumb to use technical limitations to force a higher resolution and that way drastically worsen the game performance. The frame rate was super low despite the gameplay having only static assets so far. I got this game from a Fanatical Mystery Bundle.
Finished Skábma Snowfall
Really a breath of fresh air. The story and Sámi culture felt authentic and genuinely unique. The concept of interacting with spirits using the drum is something I haven’t seen before. Gameplay is relaxing for most of the part, and unlocking abilities gradually keeps things engaging. Visually, the game looks good, but it can feel inconsistent — sometimes too smooth and bloomy, other times too dark (had to rely on NVIDIA filters). Physics also feels a bit off in places, and optimization isn’t the best either — I experienced stutters and FPS drops, and it doesn’t seem to support DSR. I also ran into a progression bug after continuing the game where I got stuck and had to load an older save. I do wish there were more puzzle-heavy sections, because the core mechanics had more potential.

Despite the drawbacks, it’s an impressive indie title with a unique identity. Looking forward to a sequel with more content, polish, and expanded mechanics.
7.5/10
The game's themes are the return of knowledge to the Sámi community, the recovery of a lost culture and language, and the relationship to the land and the world. The game explores what it is like to live as a Sámi who is unaware of their own culture, and works to explore the past and reclaim knowledge. This game is magical, and gives player a sense of wonder. Highly recommend!
