About Smalland: Survive the Wilds

✦ AI summary

You're a tiny human exploring a massive wilderness where everyday objects are towering landmarks, taming creatures to ride, building settlements, and surviving alongside up to 9 friends in this vast open world. What sets it apart is the completely fresh perspective of experiencing nature's scale from the size of an insect, combined with deep crafting, creature taming, and multiplayer cooperative survival.

"Before the time of the giants, we lived freely under the Sun and Moon. Centuries have passed, but those stories of the surface world have been passed down through the generations. Now the giants are gone, and you, Vanguard, must venture out into the wilds once more, on an urgent mission. Be brave, and do not falter…"

Explore the vast “Land of the Small"

Traverse lake sized puddles, scale skyscraper sized trees, scramble through cavernous cracks in roads, as you experience a huge open world from a new perspective. Explore dense forests, hazardous swamps and strange ruins left over from the time before. Uncover lore and knowledge from hidden NPCs scattered throughout the world and learn to survive in this vast wilderness.

Tame and ride creatures

Uncover recipes that will let you tame and ride an array of critters. Leap huge distances on the back of a Grasshopper, zoom around on a Damselfly, scurry from place-to-place on a Spider. This world and its inhabitants are yours to conquer.

Survive together

Play alongside friends with support for up to 10 players in multiplayer. Explore together, fight together, build together and survive the wilds as a team.

Build encampments on the ground or amongst the trees

Scavenge or refine resources to build your encampment with multiple material tiers, from leaves and twigs to sturdy stone. Pick your favourite spot in the world and build, or scale vast trees and claim your own settlement at the top.

Craft powerful armour sets

Collect powerful armours that provide you with resistances and abilities and mix them up to personalise your appearance. Glide through the skies in winged armour, swing from tree to tree with the grappling hook and many more.

Survive the Wilds

Most of the creatures you encounter will see you as lower on the food chain – Ants, Cockroaches, Beetles, Wasps, and Spiders all view you as a potential meal. Weather conditions and seasons are in constant flux so if you want to survive for another day, preparation is key.

Quest progression felt ok at the beginning, and the overall vibe of exploring a map as small folk was interesting. Graphics was nothing fantastic, but decent enough. The building system is also not bad but takes awhile to get used to. I feel like people not into building will easily give up and just build something functional instead of trying for aesthetics. I feel like thats where the 'good' ends. The game goes downhill the longer you play. Not really a fan of the combat, feels janky with poor hit feedback. Some enemies even bug out and teleport. Multiplayer is completely unbalanced, we could overpower anything by sheer numbers. Travelling is a chore, no obvious hints on what insects have mount capabilities until you try taming one. Not to mention having insect companions sometimes create more issues than solve them. The worst part was the endgame. For a game that started off leading you from quest to quest, it suddenly broke off there at the 'upper lands'(similar to grounded's upper yard for anyone that played), and gave no explanation on what to do next. The most logical thing was to claim a tree, but we just couldn't because it was apparently locked behind a quest, by an NP…

It's a fun game. It starts out grindy, but if you can get mounts or wings to travel faster, it will make it more enjoyable.

Compared to other base building games, the build is a little limited. Other than that, I like the story, combat, & graphics. Overall, this is a fun game. I like it.

On the surface it resembles Grounded a lot but it`s not that similar, apart from the similar setting. It does still follow the progression like it but far less of it and you can power through most of the game in a few trips out at most. There are NPCs around the map who will need something done for them before they give you a new recipe to progress most of the time. You build a base in a `safe` zone and you can then carry your base with you onto any other such area, which kind of makes you a nomad and doesn`t penalize you for doing it, instead it would penalize if you wouldn`t use it and had to run all the way back every time. I guess this is for playing on a MP server so everyone can have their own place. There are some settings that are super annoying but luckily can be turned off, like pets dying forever or you dropping loot on death, which is just tedious to keep going back to so I just keep those at off. Not that progress dense either, somewhat shallow even, but base building is well done and has plenty of different pieces to use which I love. Far easier getting building materials too as none need carrying like logs in Grounded for example.
