I understand why STEINS;GATE ELITE receives criticism. If you've never experienced STEINS;GATE before, I'd honestly recommend reading the original visual novel instead as it offers more content, more freedom with the Phone Trigger system and a generally richer experience overall. If this is your first journey across world lines, start there. Is ELITE the definitive version? No. Is it the version I'd recommend to newcomers? Also no. But as a refresher for someone who has already traveled through the world lines of STEINS;GATE, STEINS;GATE 0 and My Darling's Embrace? I found it surprisingly enjoyable. I still found myself smiling at the jokes, enjoying the conversations and remembering why I fell in love with STEINS;GATE in the first place. Actually I had never been a fan of anime. But after watching and playing Stein Gate I became a huge anime fan. This title really touched my heart.
You should play the original VN first. I bought this just for Linear Bound Phenogram and sort of just sped through it to see how it was different, it's cool to see some parts animated but the style of the original is much better and Elite's is just bland in comparison and isn't really unique in its own way. Worth giving a try if you liked the anime and played the original but is not worth it unless you want Linear Bound Phenogram.
