As someone who hasn't watched a single one of these anime, it's a good game. The story is a mash-up of an original story with all the other anime stories. It leads to some series happening a long time ago, in the middle of their arcs, or are at the start of their journey. Thankfully there's a glossary that lets you see everything about the character and the history of the world. Of course, that meant a lot of extra reading for me since I watched none of them and knew no one. The key point is watching characters from different anime interact with each other. They motivate each other, have rivalries, overlap their stories, and end up in shenanigans as anime do. The story is the vehicle that lets these stuff happen. The gameplay is tactical rpg, but It's not a hard game. It's a power fantasy, and running into difficulties just means you need to grind. The main meat is turning your favorite characters into a god killer. There's a lot to choose from after all, like super robots that dominate the field as juggernauts, or snipers that can actually just kill a boss on the other side of the map. Easily the best Super Robot Wars game in a long time, a significant step up from 30 (and I enjoyed 30 quite a bit) Could quibble with the sound design in places, but fight animation otherwise remains about as good as it has ever been, the cast choices synergize much better than I expected, and the script is one of SRW's best. Building the whole narrative around having the cast sign on with a specific nation, and building a shared dedication to public service, is an *outstanding* chemistry-builder across the cast that consistently draws out nearly every character's best selves. Echika and Forte are outstanding, immensely likable protagonists with a very compelling arc, and the overall crossover narrative does a great job of weaving together a bunch of common Generational Trauma mecha stories and building a story about the young and optimistic generation throwing off the shackles of the old and cynical to build a better future for themselves. Could certainly argue that a nearly 250 hour game is too long, but the ending soars high enough that I'm inclined to forgive it. Hope we hear about a followup soon. 4.5 stars out 5
