Super Roboy

This game has some interesting ideas, particularly around unlocking new abilities. The overall experience, though, just feels bad. Here are the things that got under my skin enough to make me want to stop playing: - An early upgrade makes it so that shooting enemies builds up target on them. You can detonate this for bonus damage. However, the activation has about a half second delay where you cannot move at all. It makes the relatively fluid combat feel halting and will be a frequent reason why you take damage you otherwise would have dodged early on. - The bosses are INCREDIBLY spongey. For all the time you spend fighting them, you won't see very many variations on their attacks. This has been the biggest drag so far. Every time I get to a boss I just want to go play something else instead. - Boss attacks are not hard to dodge but when you DO get hit, it takes a significant portion of your health. You're generally only ever three or four hits from dying at most. This makes boss fights something of a marathon where you see most of what makes a boss interesting in the first minute but you're stuck shooting for another 3 minutes to get through it. - The map can show rooms and items…

Super fun metroidvania. I have bought and played over 30 metroidvanias in the last year, and maybe 10 of them I found to capture my interests long enough to finish. I haven't finished it yet, but plan on it. Totally worth the 10 bucks i spent on it. Other recommendations include Aeterna Noctis, Hollow Knight, both ori games, monster boy, Prince of Persia: the last crown, the messenger, and of course super metroid and CV symphony of the night.

Love this game! Smoothest controls on any game I've played in a very long time!!!

Interesting little thing. I appreciate sticking to the Metroid ethos of having character upgrades build upon each other combined with the Zelda 2 style leveling system, the moment-to-moment gameplay was pretty fun (the target attacks build up by dealing damage are an especially nice touch), and I rather liked the story (people who know what a KOLM is may see some similarity, but it takes a different direction) and the comic book cutscenes that presented it. I'd throw it on the pile of MV recommendations for sure.
