The Door in the Basement

The graphics are nice, but the reused assets stick out quite a bit. I gave it 30 minutes to hook me or scare me in any meaningful way, but its simply not that scary. It's got jumpscares, but I don't really count those. The environments are pretty bland, I tried to keep myself entertained by trying to find some kind of deeper meaning in anything, but I just couldn't. Not a terrible first attempt, but I wouldn't recommend it to anybody when other games exist.

A great allegory for... well, you've lived it, as well as I. Just make sure to always trust your judgement, and yours alone. An "oracle" that sells you platitudes is not worth paying that price.

Pretty decent, but don't pay full price because $11 is definitely a rip off. There's some good content here, but honestly the demo was more scary than the final game. It had better scares and it kept up the tension and pace. The final game has some good scares, but the pace is very slow so you'll go long periods of time with no scares, no enemies, and no puzzles as you just wander around the level. The level design and art style are decent but they aren't enough to carry those long sections where nothing much is happening. Also, the sound design in this game is pretty poor. Silent jump scares aren't very effective (this game has many) and there's very little music. To fill that empty sound void they did the annoying thing where there are ominous sounds that sound like it could be a threat but you eventually realize they're coming from nowhere, so they just become an annoyance that you ignore. There isn't much plot and it's basically all conveyed via notes, but I did like the lore so I'll give them that. Overall, I got it in a horror bundle for like $2 so at that price I'd recommend it, but don't pay much more than that because the value is pretty limited.

So much build up, dark creepy lore just to fall flat at the end... I won't give a negative review because it really wasn't bad, it was a good janky horror. Just a shame the ending fell flat.

The game was made by just two people, so I give kudos for pulling something decent. But that’s just it, decent, because the game falls into that generic horror category. You know the kind; the ones where you run around collecting notes so you understand the story with some jump-scares scattered in between. However it is good at doing so, and it’s not filled with cheap jump-scares, it is a mix of horror made with the creepy/unsettling atmosphere and jump-scares. For the enemies, I won’t give it praise for those. All you will find is: guy with knife and tall guy with claws, that’s all the enemies there are. As for how to counter them.. well it’s easy, just run, your character can outrun them, personally, I never tried to hide (not sure if that works), but the levels are linear enough for you to not get lost, so you can just run from A to B while behind you there will be an enemy. P.S, regarding this, do not stop to read notes while an enemy is around, the game does not pause for you to read, make sure you read notes before encounters.
