The Drowned Deal

This game feels refreshing in the same way Riot’s experimental Demon Hand did when it first dropped as a demo. It’s not trying to be just another standard poker clone instead it reimagines the familiar rules with a bold pirate theme, new symbols, and renamed hands that give the gameplay its own identity. At first it feels different, but once you play a few rounds the system clicks and the theme makes everything more immersive. If you enjoy roguelike card games that take risks and do something unique, this is definitely worth checking out.

--This is not great. --Reading values of face cards is hard. For some reason they replaced AKQJ cards with pirate symbols like a crosshairs or whatever... except I have no idea whether the crosshairs is supposed to be a J or an A, so it's miserable guessing at a glance whether I have a straight or not. The game also renamed hands for no reason, so a upgrade for "Kraken" hands is for flushes. --For roguelike poker, Balatro is vastly better. Among other things, it doesn't ask you to check a reference guide each time you forget what hand a "Harpoon" or a "Kraken" is supposed to be. --Some really basic stuff is missing like auto-sort. (You need to click a button after each draw to sort your hand). --The pirate music is not great for extended gameplay... which is kind of a hallmark of roguelike games. The pirate theme in general does not feel like a big plus here. --No interesting roguelike upgrades or decisions in 20 minutes. Pass

If you are familiar with Balatro mechanics, there is not much to add - the game essentially follows its formula with a pirate theme. Instead of scores to beat you have opponents with a health bar. Instead of jokers there are cursed coins. Instead of poker cards there are pirate poker cards. In case you haven't played Balatro, it's a mix of scoring via poker hands and modifying each hand's score and multiplier while drafting powerful passive and active abilities. The Drowned Deal unfortunately doesn't do much to expand or enhance on the proven formula - in fact it chose to go into the opposite direction. Make a stripped down version at half the price. Obviously the Balatro formula works, so the end result is still a good game, but it's a bit difficult to imagine what kind of gamer could a smaller Balatro inspired game attract.
