About The Luminist

The subterranean mining city of Bravst is vast. It has flourished under the rule of its authoritarian governing body known as The Order. The Order has fostered an industrial and scientific revolution by harvesting a powerful resource from oil rich mushrooms which grow deep underground. Dietrich, an engineer, is trapped in a long-abandoned district of the city after a freak accident. Completely alone with only intermittent contact with the city via radio, he must traverse the ruins to escape. As he navigates the dark tunnels and abandoned dwellings he discovers clues leading to a revelation as to why this area of the mines was condemned. Now, time is against him as the rulers of Bravst hope to keep their secrets locked away in the depths of the mines.

The Luminist is a single-player third-person shooter in which the player, armed with makeshift light-based tools and projectile weapons, must repel swarms of cave-dwelling monsters in an effort to escape the treacherous mines. In addition to the main story there is also a ‘Horde’ game mode where the player can hone their skills defending against endless waves of monsters.

This game was developed as a student project at DigiPen Institute of Technology and was created for educational purposes only. Please check out our publisher page for more information.

Great job nailing the atmosphere. Voice acting was a little bit cringy but on point. Mechanics need work, aiming was truly horrible. Other than that easy 7/10 for multi-student project. Good luck in your careers.

The atmosphere is very good, I was immersed very fast. It's a little janky but besides that it's very good!

The combat is rough and doesn't feel very good if I'm being brutally honest. But considering the context this was made in and that it's free I consider that a nitpick. The real prize here is this team's incredible polish and effort in worldbuilding through in game lore, art direction, level design, scripts, vo better than half of what aaa provides to this day, and atmosphere in spades. The pacing is on point and and its incredibly engaging and intuitive and seems almost effortless, which means it took a lot of effort. I wish they made a whole game, just tune up the combat ;)

The Luminist is one of literally thousands of student projects infesting Steam. It's from DigiPen. While student projects tend to be better quality than most "amateur" made games, we must still question what value such projects have for gamers. As with all student projects, this isn't really a fully fleshed out game, it's just the result of an academic exercise, and as such it has much more limited value as a game than a professionally developed game would have. Educational institutions should not be using Steam as a dumping ground for homework assignments (especially if the students didn't even pass the course). Sure, it helps their marketing and helps the students feel good about themselves, but this is another case of a business putting themselves before the needs of gamers. However, this is a rare exception where it's actually a good thing that we got a homework assignment shoved through Steam Direct. This is a third persion adventure/exploration horror shooter where you take on the role of a miner trapped in a mine. You use makeshift light-based tools and projectile weapons to fight off monsters. The story involves an electrical failure and a search for clues about th…
