Trick and Treat - Visual Novel

Art isn't the best. Spend a LOT of time just starting at the same screen going through loads of poorly written text.

I played this game YEARS ago, all I remembered from it is that I found it very weird and 'icky' but I couldn't remember why. I've been going through my library to finish up some games and came across this again. Replaying it now that I'm older makes me able to put that feeling into words. My main issue with the came was, and is that (although it's not explicit) it's definitely sexual. To my knowledge that tag only got added later on, but it definitely needs to be there. Both female characters only seem to have the goal to kiss the guy in every single route. Now, I'll be honest, I did end up skipping a lot in my replay since I really started to find it disturbing. It just feels weird to me since they are all supposed to be minors. They could've worked so much more about the old myths and reason why Alex went into the woods in the first place, but that whole plot just gets overshadowed by the constant flirting and weird buildup. Overall would not recommend. It is very easy to play on steamdeck. Whole game achievements only would take about an hour, actual reading around two.

Trick and Treat: Visual Novel is a short mystery and romance game that puts me in a cursed forest on Halloween night. I am separated from my friends after something strange happens, and from there I have to work out what is going on while trying to find a way out. The story introduces me to Ashley and Lilian, and neither one is quite as straightforward as they first seem. I like that the game keeps the setting fairly simple because it lets the mystery and the choices stay at the centre of the experience. The choices are probably the best part for me. There are seven different endings, so I cannot just treat every conversation as something I can click through without thinking. Some decisions can lead me towards a better outcome while others can get me killed, and that gives the short story some replay value. I also like having two different love interests because the relationships give the story another reason to explore the different paths instead of only trying to find one ending. The atmosphere works well too. The forest setting gives the game a creepy Halloween feeling without needing complicated gameplay systems. overall, this game is decent enough for a visual novel, it builds blocks of what a visual novel should be, a compelling story, creative elements and a hint of mystery as well as providing meaningful choices that makes the game good. however, the game lacks in artistic imagery, specifically how half the game is just either a white or black screen. furthermore, despite getting all the endings the game seems rather short and could be explored between the signifigant characters (will not say who due to potential spoilers). Overall, the game is good for those who wish to play this due to not having anything to do but is not reccomended for those who has other games to play.
