I have a love hate relationship with this game. You play as Teru in a story with her three best friends (Subaru, Suzuki, and Kaga) and to me at least the characters all suck. It was semi-enjoyable and like most visual novels it offers a "Harem" option. But Everyone overall personality is terrible.
Suzuki knows your dating Subaru and constantly flirts with/Kisses you anyway ( while having you hide it from subaru), Subaru is constantly moody, and angry with you. And kaga gets so upset at you being with subaru that you's go through fights left and right. Even your character, dates subaru whilst knowing kaga likes them and that your character likes suzuki. And while there are some story pieces that I overall enjoy there are an equal amount that made me hate everyone there. The only romance arc I liked was with Sergei (Who's a foreign Exchange student) and you barely even see him through the game.
While these traits/tropes can be done right/well. I just feel like typical didnt hit the mark properly3 found this helpful
Typical is an independent visual novel that wears its inspirations proudly, presenting a warm and familiar tale about youth, companionship, and the uncertainty that comes with growing up. Developed by kalanhow and published by TsunamiGames, the game follows Amaterasu, an art student navigating university life in Tokyo alongside a small circle of friends whose relationships evolve over time. The title itself hints at the experience awaiting players: a story built around recognizable anime-inspired themes, where everyday conversations and emotional decisions take center stage. While it does not attempt to radically redefine the genre, it succeeds in crafting an accessible and inviting narrative for players who appreciate character-focused storytelling. At its heart, the game explores the delicate balance between friendship and romance. Amaterasu's interactions with her companions gradually reveal differing personalities, ambitions, and emotional struggles. Each member of the cast fulfills a distinct role within the story, helping to create an engaging group dynamic that carries the experience from beginning to end. Rather than relying on grand plot developments, Typical emphasizes t…1 found this helpful
Good art, but the storyline is an exercise in frustration
I would not recommend purchasing this visual novel, especially at full price as completing the story for me was an uncharacteristic act of masochism. I will elucidate further below with many spoilers, so continue at your own risk.
The main criticism I have is that the characters are narcissists, manipulative and controlling of not just other people, but also their 'friends'. The dynamic truly exemplifies 'With friends like these, who needs enemies'; where the major 'twist' of the story being that the friends manipulated the main character into the scenario that is the crux of the story. It is clear from the beginning, even to the protagonist, that Suzuki probably never would have accepted her feelings sincerely, merely played with them and yet Kagari, (the 'best friend') pushed her into trying to confess. Suzuki is known as a playboy, yet the protagonist is so arrogant to think that she can change him (whether this is Kagari's influence is unclear). It is baffling that she is further surprised when he ACTS like a playboy, flirting and touching her sensually without her consent when she is dating S…1 found this helpful
The art, in many situations, was lovely, but there were also really awkwardly drawn scenes for some CGs. However, the art was not my issue as much as the writing bothered me. One line written was racist and pulled me right out of the story, never mind the way the characters were flatly written, or how misogynistic two of the LIs were. The only good thing was the option to have the MC end up with both LIs; that was a nice change for an otome game, and one I wish happened more often.
