Veritus

Played for a couple hours and got frustrated with the level design, it just felt too tedious honestly. Definitely a fun game that's got the Link's Awakening spirit to it with a few clever ideas, but it feels like a lot of content can easily be missed if you aren't careful about progressing to the next area, where you're locked in and have to keep going.

On an audio and visual level this game feels cool. The writing also contributed a bit to the game's vibe, but a lot of it flew over my head presumably on account of me not finishing the previous game's postgame. The gameplay was just kinda fine though. Most puzzles felt a little weirdly open, I often had to go outta my way to not feel like cheesing them, but like once or twice I couldn't figure out any "proper" feeling solution. I wasn't bored or frustrated with the puzzles at least, I just under-satisfied. The non-puzzle related aspects of the dungeon-crawling gameplay are still solid. I'm totally biased towards leaving positive reviews, and especially biased towards Colorgrave, but I enjoyed the game overall

Veritus is a 6-8 hour Zelda-like that is technically a direct sequel to Prodigal. But, the list price is only $7 and that is because, as recently as the 2010s, it would have been sold as standalone post-game DLC (think: Prey: Mooncrash, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, etc). Context: Prodigal is one of the best Zelda-likes on Steam, alongside Pipistrello (2025) and Master Key (2024). You should only play Veritus if you have completed Prodigal. Veritus is... very weird, though I still had a good time with it. In Prodigal, the game begins with a very 'ordinary people in a small town' vibe, and only deep into the endgame do you get glimpses of demigods & immortals and this whole bizarre array of 'powers that be.' In Veritus, from the jump you are part of a crew of... beings... ('mortal' status unclear) who are invading a magical castle in another plane of existence maybe to try to slay an imprisoned god. The whole game has a very 'hallucination' quality to it, where everybody assumes you're totally in on the plan, and it's as if you, the player, are the only one in the dark, trying to put pieces together. Very good sequel to the devs previous game Prodigal. Continues the story and world building of their other games and does a very good job. Interesting story, characters, and world. Music is fantastic and composer deserves a raise. Gameplay is also great. It plays like top down Zelda games like Prodigal, but faster and more actiony. Veritus is smaller, shorter and more focused than Prodigal, but still well worth it. I loved all their games so far and will be immediately buying the next one.
