You play as Sarah Elizabeth Wright, exploring through your grandfathers attic, solving small puzzles and uncovering the story through gameplay. What Never Was aims to combine the gameplay of classic point-and-click games with the control schemes of modern adventure and walking sim games.
It is inspired by the likes of Myst, Indiana Jones and The Longest Journey and borrows themes from folklore, Norse mythology, and works from authors like H.P. Lovecraft.
The game is the first solo game and passion project of game developer Acke Hallgren with the support of a handful of supportive creatives.

Hey mr Piggles! I downloaded this because it was free and figured I'd get 20 minutes of "walking simulator" before uninstalling it. Instead, I got a genuinely charming little adventure. The game only takes around an hour to finish, but it makes that hour count. The puzzles are straightforward without treating you like you've never seen a keyboard, and the story has a warm, nostalgic feel that reminded me why I enjoy these kinds of games in the first place. Exploring your grandfather's attic slowly turns into something much more magical than I expected. The visuals are surprisingly good for a solo developer, and the atmosphere does a lot of the heavy lifting. It's the kind of game you play with a cup of coffee, headphones on, and just let yourself get immersed. My only complaint is that I wanted more. Just as I was getting invested in the world, the credits rolled. That's not necessarily a bad thing—it just means the game left me wishing there was another chapter. For a free game, it's honestly hard to criticise. It tells a complete story, respects your time, and doesn't overstay its welcome. 10/10 attic cleaning experience.
