Winter's Trumpet

For anyone that is already invested in the Asher series, it doesn’t hurt picking up Winter’s Trumpet to tide you over. It’s a quick, simple, little game that takes place when a flu was sweeping across Aeser and switches between three characters. This also acts as a bridge to Empress of Aeser as the series is moving away from being a visual novel to a point and click one. Though, If you’re new to the Asher series, I don’t recommend playing this one first. This is not a situation where playing the prequel first is best. It expects you to know how this world works and it’s going to be confusing if you don’t (even I was a little confused before I remembered) and it’s not long enough to where you can pick it up (like I did with Tell a Demon). [i]Winter's Trumpet[/i] is a charming and short point-and-click/visual novel hybrid with a retro design and a slightly creepy atmosphere. It takes place in the same world as [i]Asher[/i] and [i]Tell a Demon[/i], and players who love these games have absolutely nothing to lose by giving it a go: in fact, the events of [i]Winter's Trumpet[/i] take place before those depicted in [i]Asher[/i], and the former gives us an interesting look at the motivations of several key characters of the series. For people who haven't played the dev's other games, beginning with [i]Winter's Trumpet[/i] isn't the best way to go, in my opinion, since it's short and the story is a bit vague if you're not already aware of what the main plotlines are. Apart from the writing, which is excellent as expected from Sun Labyrinth, I really enjoyed the character portraits and the soundtrack, which has some great moments: I would definitely buy it if the developer released it separately.

A lovely addition to the series, and best read after completing the first game (Asher), to better understand the characters and setting. Great art, music, and atmosphere, as per usual. Was also very nice to see the character you'd least expect allow himself to be somewhat vulnerable.

To head this off at the pass: I agree with other reviews that [i]Winter's Trumpet[/i] isn't necessarily the best point of entry to the Aeser universe - it's more of a short companion game. On Steam, [i]Tell A Demon[/i] is a more complete visual novel; off-Steam (itch.io), [i]Asher[/i] is also a great starting point involving the same characters (and free). That being said, I really enjoyed it! The aesthetic is extremely reminiscent of early point-and-click games I remember playing as a child, and much like those games, while it is sometimes a bit rough from a technical standpoint, [i]Winter's Trumpet[/i] has a really strong visual identity. The story is a simple, bite-sized, but very poignant bit of drama; the reason I would hesitate to recommend it as an entry point is that the universe of Aeser is fairly high-concept (I mean this in the best way) and can be a bit difficult to absorb in a short experience like this one. If you have enjoyed any other game by this developer however, this is an easy recommendation.

I would not recommend this as the first game you pick up from Sun's Labyrinth. The Drowned Bride is a better introduction to Tetra and Rosemary and for the world itself Goblet of Mercy is free on steam.
