‘Unnatural Freaks: Wolf At Evergreen’ is an interactive story about small-town sightings of a werewolf. You play the role of a vlogger talking to all the townsfolk about what they did or didn’t see. Despite the game crashing a few times I did enjoy the game and started to get into the story. Sure, it only lasts for about 30-40 mins and it is very low-poly, but for a free game it’s worth a look if only for the storyline and to give a new developer a chance. I would love to see more from this game and I would be happy to pay for the next episode, just so long as the content amount justifies the fee.

"Wolf At Evergreen" is a student project from Curtin University in Australia, and goes a long way to show why Australia is not a big name in the video game industry. This is basically just a low poly VR exclusive tech demo... under no circumstances should anyone think this is actually "Chapter 1" of anything, it's just a student project pretending to be something more. This was not intended as a game for gamers, but for course credit. Due to the poor quality of the product, it's unclear if the student passed... if they did, there's a problem with the academic system in Australia. This VR exclusive tech demo has you wander around, wave your hands in VR, and talk to some NPCs, all the while your eyeballs are assaulted by very poor looking low poly (sometimes) 3D graphics... and it's important when making a game to at least aim for some consistency in the visual design. Because this is just a student project with no intention for it to be an actual product for gamers to play, and thus lacks sincerity (when will students realize Steam is not a dumping ground for incomplete homework assignments??) it compares very badly to sincerely, genuinely made games made for gamers. This was actually a pleasant surprise. You play as Frankie, who runs the Unnatural Freaks vlog. And you've rolled into town to investigate werewolf sightings. Everyone seems to be happy with the tourism and the new werewolf museum, but is there really a werewolf? Overall it was lovely as I'm a huge fan of werewolves, so I loved that the town went all out with the theme. Though I was puzzled as the museum was both opened after the sightings, but the current curator took it over? Or did he mean the building? I encountered one glitch where the mayor stopped speaking and I had to restart the game. And the characters might need some volume tweaking. But it's free and there are werewolves. Or at least one. Maybe. Will we be hearing the pitter patter of tiny wolf paws at the end? I wouldn't be surprised as the museum has a paranormal romance section.
