About Crying Suns

✦ AI summary

Command a space fleet through the crumbling Galactic Empire in this tactical rogue-lite where your strategic decisions in procedurally-generated battles determine humanity's fate. Uncover the mystery of a fallen civilization and your own origins across a story-rich campaign inspired by sci-fi classics like Dune and Foundation, with over 300 branching story events shaping your journey as a cloned admiral.

When FTL meets Foundation... and Dune

Crying Suns is a tactical rogue-lite that puts you in the role of a space fleet commander as you explore a mysteriously fallen empire.

In this story rich experience inspired by Dune and Foundation, each successful run will uncover the truth about the Empire... and yourself as well.

Main Features

- Space exploration in a procedurally-generated universe
- Tactical fights between battleships and their squadron fleets
- More than 300 possible story events
- A deep and dramatic storyline structured in 6 chapters
- A dark and disturbing atmosphere inspired by our favorite S-F universes (Foundation, Dune, Battlestar Galactica)

The story: The epic journey of a clone

After 700 years of peace and prosperity, the Galactic Empire has suddenly been shattered into pieces. The OMNIs, god-like machines which did everything for their human masters, have mysteriously shut down. And humankind, having long since lost the ability to survive on its own, is dangerously close to extinction. But somewhere in a far corner of the Galaxy is Gehenna, a planet of ice and rock and a top-secret facility that is the pinnacle of Imperial Tech and also humanity’s last chance.

You are a clone of Admiral Ellys Idaho, a weapon fashioned from flesh, the best Imperial Admiral ever to battle in the stars and you have just been awoken on this planet by its strange and darkly-humorous Guardian, Kaliban, the last functional OMNI to exist.

Your mission: skillfully command a battleship through the Empire's now chaotic, violent clusters ––where one wrong move could be your last–– as you try to reactivate the OMNIs and save the future of all humankind. But you must leave Gehenna now.... for time has almost run out.

✦ AI summary

Crying Suns impresses players with its compelling sci-fi story, atmospheric soundtrack, and striking visual style that make it stand out as a thoughtful indie experience. However, the gameplay suffers from repetition and RNG frustrations that wear thin across runs, with combat lacking the excitement and variety of similar games like FTL, leading some to feel the roguelike structure overstays its welcome.

Great game! The gameplay loop is ok, but story and atmosphere are really amazing. Soundtrack is peak, too!

Eh. Initially kind of cool but the RNG is particularly loopy, the gameplay is not as fast paced and exciting as FTL, and the game is repetitive. I don't feel the urge to keep trying. I am going not recommend as I do detest repetition, particularly when crossed with loopy RNG. It tends to mean when you are doomed it is a long slow slog to annihilation. You waste a lot of time in a death spiral.

Awesome deep sense story, atmospheric music and sfx, unique visual style. Simple brilliant.

A wonderful indie dark sci-fi with elements of FTL with some of best sprite work I've ever seen.

Very cool game. I'm not a fan of rogue-lites/rogue-likes, but in this one I spent a lot of time. + What I liked most: the story. It's... cool. Most AAA+++ games have much more shallow storytelling. It's even more funny with current AI-histeria. + It's very solid as tactics game too. I'm biased, I love turn-based and slow-paced tactics games, but I played a lot and this one is very fun. - I'm not fan of rogue-likes :) I'd happily play the same game with less gameplay hours, but with saves etc. Basically, you can ignore this cons.

First off I'd like to say this is a great game and you should play it (try the demo its basically 1/6 of the game), especially if you like FTL. The story and visuals are really good. My main gripe with the game is how repetitive it gets, there's really not that many events and a lot of them are actually not randomized so once you learn what happens it's the exact same every run, and you have to spam through all the dialogue which just gets annoying. The combat while fun at first, is not nearly as good as FTL. I will say the different ships are done pretty well, but there's just not that much variation in combat play style in general. I know it might sound like I'm ragging on the game pretty hard, but the story + atmosphere really carry here. The only negative I can say about the story is the ending (the final choice) felt very lack luster and I really wish they elaborated a bit more on it. TLDR: If you mainly care about gameplay, its solid but gets extremely repetitive. If you mainly care about story then this game is perfect.
