Death and Taxes

Wow. 12 hours and 7 playthroughs, and finally 100% achievements. Not sure if this is the intended experience, but I actually think my compulsion to get 100% helped me really enjoy this game. When I first picked this game up, I honestly did not expect this much replayability. It seemed impossible to want to repeat the full 28 days so many times because this job felt so much like a tedious desk job with strict rules to follow. On the first run, I started by just carefully following Fate’s orders, and I understood the concept that my actions have consequences from reading the news on the phone the next day. Yet I did not completely understand the mechanics, so of course the whole world went to ♥♥♥♥ without me knowing why. On the next run, I realized I didn’t have to completely listen to Fate. Even though I accidentally got fired from disobeying too much / complaint about the job too much to the point that my own profile showed up to be marked dead, I learned that I had more agency than I thought. I followed the red profile’s orders and killed Fate. Then, I wanted to become Fate’s biggest fan -- following all his orders, agreeing that humans have to die, and wholeheartedly carrying…

I'm a bit on the fence on this game. I think it's ok but some of the things in it could be improved such as the pacing. I did kinda find myself just clicking through things without really paying attention, when this game is based on figuring out the best approach for judgement. I do like the characters, but they felt somewhat to be too much in the background. It's ok and I do like the concept.

Review with only one playthrough. While the game looks good, the gameplay gets boring fast. You have your sets of orders for the day, read some profile and decide who lives and who dies. The 'choices matter' part have two branches: -Obey orders or not. -Kill or let live those profiles. You can read a one-liner tweet in your mobile the following day. Mkay I guess. To really understand the consequences of your actions you need two items from the shop, which... you could skip by accident. At the end of the game I didn't feel like my choices affected the outcome the least. I played mostly by the rules, but taking my time to heal the world as much as possible while at it. [spoiler] The snow globe showed some improved buildings and a lot of '+' signs, so I thought everything was doing good. Then some sort of super-flu started killing humanity anyway and felt like the game forced me to take the doomsday path, at which point I lost interest. [/spoiler] Also, the conversations with the secondary characters were uninteresting. [spoiler] All that lore about the higher-ups and conspiracies mattered little. I guess it makes sense in new game+, but I'm not willing to play again.[/spoiler]

I always love games like these about going through people/profiles/etc and making observations and choices, it's always fun, and honestly kind of relaxing. It's usually repetitive but in a story mode type of sense, new challenges and rules and such are added that makes it fun regardless. Love this game! Art style is really cute to me as well

A fun rendition of the "Papers, Please" formula. If you enjoyed that, you'll likely enjoy this too and I'd call this way more laid back and less emotionally taxxing.
