What Steam players say
Recent verbatim reviews from Steam — separate from playze.io community reviews below.
SpellRogue is a roguelike deckbuilder with dice mechanics that players find addictive and mechanically sound, drawing favorable comparisons to Slay the Spire and similar games, though opinions diverge on execution and staying power. Common praise centers on synergistic spell combinations, solid presentation, and robust mechanics, while complaints focus on uneven class balance, slow unlock progression, and a general sense that the game doesn't fully commit to its dice-rolling identity or deliver particularly exciting or impactful choices.
Addicting roguelike along the Spire genre. But actually so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ one-more-run addicting and the turn tactics are very cool.
This game is an excellent take on the roguelike "deckbuilding" genre, where during the run instead of having a deck with cards you cultivate a set of spells that require dice in order to be played. The amount of content that the game provides is outstanding (I would only hope for a few more enemy variability). The mehanics are robust and the feeling of progressing towards the harder levels of the game is outstanding (Although the first levels might be a little bit on the easy side for experienced players). If you like games like Dream Quest and StS you should definitely take a look at this gem!
It's a 7/10 semi-deck builder. You get 4-6 spell slots which you can arrange and fill between battles. You get random spells from shops and encounters, and spend upgrade tokens to enhance their effects or give yourself more spell slots. Each spell is cast with dice which are rolled each turn; some spells and artifacts give you more dice or change the behavior of dice. It's fine. The concept is workable, but the execution is just really lackluster. Some classes have strong identity (the Green element is the easiest class in the game by far). Others have the attempt at clever gimmicks that just aren't executed well so they fall flat. Gimmicks like "destroying dice gives you bonuses!" - except that the game will give you an anemic number of dice to roll each turn, so to make this work you have to invest heavily into generating more so your deck is full of support spell crap. Or gimmicks like "moving around your spells will influence them!" - only moving your spells costs massive resources and gives you hardly any returns. It's a fine game for a few hours of engagement, but don't sweat it too hard. It's not well enough designed to be persistently interesting or fun. It's unlikely…
Good fun, though I'm done with it after about 15 hours. Wanted to beat the true final boss at least once, but now that I did, I'm shelving it. Pros: Getting a synergistic "deck" working is fun and had a few eureka moments for me. There also seems to be a lot of cards and more cards to unlock as you go. The presentation is good. Cons: The unlocks are painfully slow. I would have like to check out the rest of the starter decks and starter relics to see if I can find fun combinations. But unlocking those takes ages, so I saw maybe 20% at the time I called it quits. I guess this could be a pro for people who love the game and still unlock things after 80 hours, but I'd speed it up at least a bit. Most of the mechanics and cards are just not very exciting. Not sure how to put this, but in a game like StS when you see three choices of cards, you go "Oh man, this one would fit really well, but oh, this would open up such possibilites, and option three is probably a very stupid pick, but just imagine I pull that off". I just never really felt like that here, aside from the before mentioned eureka moments, but those happened very rarely. Still recommending it, since I got enough fun out …
great game!!!
SpellRogue is the most 5/10 game I can think off, it does not do many things wrong nor does it stand out in any way either. Gameplay Similar to Slice & Dice and Dicey Dungeons you roll 6 sided dice and use them for effects, yet where Slice & Dice heavily leans into the dice rolling effect to stand out SpellRogue does not commit fully. Where Dicey Dungeons stand out in its upgrading and usage of dice-in-cards making it feel like you are doing powerful combos, SpellRogue instead is a death by a thousand cuts. You select your own path with fights, loot and events along the way similar to Slay the Spire but the choices dont feel impactful unlike similar games. Characters are your bog standard ''nature guy does nature effects'' ''mage guy rerolls dice'' ''fire guy does fire effects'', its not bad in any way yet it does not stand out either. Card effects are often meaningless, since there are so many similar effects that do (almost) the same but under a different name meaning you cant expect to build for a specific effect consistently especially when triggered from an enemy attack. There are currently 55 effects in the game listed on the wiki but even more in…
