RUINER

This is such a weird case of "what are these reviews even talking about?". After some initial learning curves on mechanics this game is insanely straight forward - even on hard - and there's not really a whole lot of BS outside of occasionally janky projectile hitboxes. Story's plain and keeps you wanting to move, stat page lets you freely customize builds (even mid fight) so you can try something else immediately. Death is instant lets you restart fast, checkpoints are pretty fair. The highs are pretty great - putting multiple enemies in execute status to bounce between them for executes. Absolutely deleting tough enemies by zipping around at mach 10 dumping damage into them. The real complaints I have are very few. Not being able to go back to previous side quests if you were just blasting through levels outside of quitting to main menu. There's not a whole lot of meat on the world either besides aesthetics, and that does drag it down a bit. Some weird animation bugs(mostly during executes). But nothing that I'd throw a thumbs down for. If I had to take a guess without looking it up at all, release RUINER was probably way more rough than it is after all the post launch patches…

A fun & challenging cyberpunk themed twin-stick shooter with a mild chance of cyberpsychosis in form of epilepsy or seizure. Storytelling is one area where Ruiner falls short, but its striking art style, music & surprisingly varied gameplay still make it an easy recommendation.

Well that was a waste of $2 and 2 hours. IMO RUINER is just straight up a bad game. I was drawn in by the cool aesthetics but everything else is such a disappointment. The story and dialogue is so cookie cutter, the voice acting makes me cringe every time, there seems to be (I only made it 2 hours in) barely any depth to the progression, and I'm dedicating the rest of the review to the combat. RUINER's combat is incredibly unsatisfying and unrewarding. All the guns except for the shotguns and laser canons feel practically useless, the melee weapons are extremely unresponsive, the abilities are fine but aren't a replacement for the subpar weapons, and the enemies are incredibly annoying. Since every weapon has limited ammunition, each encounter is pretty much just killing enemies in the hopes that one of them has a shotgun and then savoring each of the six bullets in the shotgun before going back to shooting enemies with paintball guns. Despite all that, the game isn't even really hard and often not even challenging at all (at least on normal for the portion I played).
