About The Dark Queen of Mortholme

✦ AI summary

The Dark Queen of Mortholme casts you as the final boss defending your realm against an impossibly persistent Hero, wielding devastating dark magic in pixel-art fixed-screen combat. Your dialogue choices reshape the story across multiple endings, forcing you to decide whether to crush this nuisance or confront the truth behind their relentless return.

Change is inevitable

Experience a macabre, short-form, second-person indie, you play as The Dark Queen of Mortholme, the final barrier between the Hero and the end credits. In this fixed-screen pixel art game, use the Queen's attacks against this hero, slay them, and quell this nuisance once and for all. But, wait. How is this possible? The Hero keeps coming back.

Multiple Endings

Depending on your dialogue choices, the story will play out differently. Will you see the Hero's point of view, or continue ruling as the Queen Everlasting?

Features

  • Unleash Queenly Chaos: Wield the ever-evolving arsenal of the Dark Queen’s most devastating attacks.

  • Handcrafted Pixel Art: Painstakingly designed for impeccable game feel.
  • A Haunting Score: Fall into the tones of the Dark Queen’s domain.
  • Conquer and Collect: Unlock Steam Achievements as you slay this annoying hero!
  • A Challenge Worth Finishing: Designed to be beaten in a single, emotional sitting.

✦ AI summary

Players praise this short game for its unique perspective of playing as the final boss instead of the hero, along with its emotional impact and meaningful narrative that stays with them. However, some find the repetitive gameplay and tedious mechanics boring, with complaints about the limited interaction and relatively high price for the brief playtime, though others feel the low cost justifies the experience.

It was an interesting little game, worth it.

A really cute and endearing little game, I brought this as a part of the Ars Independent Festival and can see why it was nominated in there. I found the dialogue to be engaging and interesting, though I wish it had a larger affect on the game as it is quite inconsequential, which for a simple game with little features is a deterrent. For the second playthrough it can be quite tedious, especially after you have found the winning strat which makes it quite mindless. But overall I would recommend this game, even if it is mostly for the art style.

More of a glorified visual novel. You don't get much combat wise. But it's a good experience story wise ! And very nice visuals! Defo wroth your time, and at 2€ on sale it's a good price! It's a bit short for 5€ tho... I wish there was more. In a good way as it doesn't feel lacking! I would recommend this to about anyone.

Fun litttle concept game (more narrative than combat)

Really easy game, fun to play but cane barely call it a game. It took me less than one hour to play, and I took more just to see the different dialogues, but nothing else new. Great idea and execution, but that's about it.
