About Rogue Legacy

✦ AI summary

Fight your way through procedurally generated castles as a succession of flawed heroes, each with unique traits and abilities, knowing that death only makes your lineage stronger through manor upgrades. This roguelike masterpiece combines brutal difficulty with genuine progression and charm, letting anyone be a hero—even if you're colorblind, a dwarf, or afflicted with vertigo.

Rogue Legacy is a genealogical rogue-"LITE" where anyone can be a hero.

Each time you die, your child will succeed you. Every child is unique. One child might be colorblind, another might have vertigo-- they could even be a dwarf.

That's OK, because no one is perfect, and you don't have to be perfect to win this game. But you do have to be pretty darn good because this game is HARD. Fortunately, every time you die all the gold you've collected can be used to upgrade you manor, giving your next child a step up in life and another chance at vanquishing evil.

But you shouldn't listen to me. You should check out the trailer. It explains the game better then I ever could.

If you really want to READ about this game though, then you should check out our bullet list below.

Here's what Rogue Legacy IS:
 • A procedurally generated adventure. Explore new castles with every life.
 • Rogue-lite. Your character dies, but with each passing your lineage grows and becomes stronger.
 • Tons of unique traits that makes each playthrough special. Ever wanted to be dyslexic? Now you can!
 • More than 8 classes to choose from (9)! Each class has unique abilities that change the way you play the game.
 • Over 60 different enemies to test your skills against. Hope you like palette-swaps!
 • Massive, expandable skill tree. Rack in the loot to upgrade your manor and give your successors a cutting edge.
 • Oh yeah, there's a Blacksmith and an Enchantress shop but we forgot to show them in the trailer...
 • Equip your heroes with powerful weaponry and armor. Or gain new abilities like flight, dash, and air jumping.
 • Tons of secrets and easter eggs to uncover... or are there? Yes there are.
 • Got a controller? Play with a controller. Big Picture ready.
 • Clowns.

I love this game and think it was something innovative for its time, but don’t really think it’s worth playing nowadays unless you catch it on sale and really want to try it out. Roguelikes can get pretty grindy and repetitive just by nature of what they are, but this takes it to a whole new level. The idea of progressing as your own descendent is super cool, but after a while you realize it’s pretty superficial and actually makes progression feel less satisfying because I’m barely meaningfully invested in my family tree, let alone its individual members. The gameplay is ok. I’m not mad at it, but map designs and enemies seem to feel repetitive after a while. Different traits for different heroes is super fun…but like a lot of the game the magic wears off after a while and it isn’t enough to keep you hooked in the game. Ultimately, I think it’s just a case of a game that was good for its time getting outclassed by other options and modern expectations—for me at least. I think it’s a good enough game that if you do try it out you’re going to have a few hours of fun and probably won’t be regret your purchase, but I definitely would get it on sale. Honestly if you can, I would su…

One of the better Rogue-lites in my opinion. This game get's the gameplay loop right for me. The meta-progression is a nice touch but it doesn't do to much too interfere with the tight platforming and raw action from run to run. It feels more arcade-like, which I really enjoy. This game also doesn't shy away from throwing enemies at you, the different attack patterns make the platforming refreshingly challenging. Fortunately it also stays this way even after engaging more with the progression system. Honestly I would have loved an actual score attack or speedrun mode that provides two or three distinct loadouts or something. Apart from that I think this game is a pretty good take on the Rogue-lite formula and is a great addition to the genre.

This is not an easy game, at least not to me. I have to keep grinding for the gold to get myself stronger... At the end, I just brute forced the last three bosses with high HP, tanking damage, then damaging the boss while in the brief invincible stat lol

This game sucks. You can't keep the gold you make for each run so progressing is annoying. I regret buying this game

I bought this game back in like 2015 and young me got bored. Older me really enjoyed this game. It has a ton of really solid gameplay mechanics/modifiers. Most runs are fun to go through, although sometimes I just got unlucky with how the castle ended up settling. Tons of mini-bosses and the four main bosses are challenging. The final fifth boss was by far the easiest to beat, I only needed two tries before beating him. The visuals are simple but I like the art style, and the story is serviceable. A solid 8/10 game, and I'm looking forward to picking up the sequel at some point.

Eventhough this is a 2D platformer from 13 years ago, it still holds up today. Great soundtrack, great art, incredible variety of enemies, boss fights, unlocks, upgrades, lore,... There is everything you could want from an action roguelike platformer. Sure the controls aged a bit poorly and could be less static or wonky. It's still very fun to improve your lineage, check out the different traits and curses your offspring could have. Max leveling and New Game+ are amazing. Everything seems great. But then you check out the achievements. And there is one, a special one, which doesn't seem too crazy at first. Beat the game in under 15 deaths. Alright, seems doable. After playing through multiple new games and beating every boss multiple times, even the very hard remixed bosses, this shouldn't take too long. The last 20-30 hours of my playtime was put into this very achievement. Looking back, I think it's the perfect challenge. Playstyle is pretty much: Patience, playing safe and not getting greedy. But man does it get the better of you. A run takes about 2 hours maybe more and it is so tough to not get sucked into impatience or delusions of skill. The amount of times I…
