The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel

So I'm still combing through all the games I've played, in the attempt to write reviews for them all, and not really paying all the much attention. Then I come across a random click in my library which leads me to the words: "Write a review for The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel" ... What a daunting task. How? That's almost impossible for me to fully articulate my thoughts on the matter but I'll try to keep it as brief as possible. This game single-handedly got me into Falcom, the company, as a whole. It was borne off a random recommendation from a friend years ago which spurred a crazed crusade over a very long-standing franchise over years and millions of words of text since then. I wouldn't say that this is a perfect game, nor is the franchise as a whole, but it is certainly one to play if you need something different from Japanese RPGs as a whole and this was a fine entry point, regardless of what you might be told from some that suggest that Trails in the Sky is mandatory or some other place in the series. In terms of the gameplay, I largely prefer this one over the older titles in the franchise (Sky, Crossbell) and think this to be one of the nicer systems…

And so concludes the first run of the Trails of Cold Steel series on Nightmare difficulty. Replaying this game now, after having gone through all the other titles, hits completely differently compared to the first time I played it. Noticing all the little references, the characters’ behaviors, and especially all those things that once seemed normal but actually hid important parts of the story made this replay far more enjoyable than I expected. And now, on to Trails of Cold Steel II on Nightmare mode! I hope I can finish the entire Cold Steel saga and Daybreak 1 & 2 before the release of Beyond the Horizon 😂 Vote 9/10

Good game

Bought this on a whim, on sale. It's the biggest regret of a purchase on steam so far, enjoy spending 4x the amount you did for a full story that is not very good. Play one of the other JRPGs that does a better time building up its story, this game does not respect your time. This game wants to seem deep and interesting but it's as shallow as a puddle, filled with all the annoying anime tropes. Completely killed any desire to play any other games in the series.
