Ruff City

A close friend recommended this game to me, suspecting I was exactly the type of nerd it was made for. They couldn't have been more right - and if you wish, you may contextualize this review with that in mind. I am pretty emphatically among the ranks of the target audience for Ruff City. This is a simple, light-spirited, effective, bite-sized beat-em-up. It's not trying to re-invent the wheel, and it doesn't - its characters are pun-oriented and tropey, its mechanics are light and straightforward, and - as advertised - it contains only four major levels, each containing one boss. In my opinion, it doesn't NEED to go out of its way to set itself apart. It accomplishes just about everything it DOES set out to do, and in a way, THAT sets it apart for me. I've been obsessed with the Kunio/River City Ransom franchise for my entire life, but never really played classic, stop n' fight n' go beat-em-ups - this game molds itself as the latter. As someone with very little experience with classic beat-em-ups, I found this game to be a dream to play. Ruff City is a treat to play. It's short and sweet, and manages to be a pleasure to play from start to finish. The controls are simple to grasp, so anyone can jump in and experiment with the tools on offer. Although the jump is a tad low, there's few times where it becomes a detriment. The visuals are very nice. I enjoy the art style and character design. The music is also enjoyable. It gets you in the mood to punch some guys. (In the game, that is.) There's not much I dislike. Although being able to pick between the two characters in single player would be nice, that's barely an issue. My only real complaint is that like many snacks, I'm left hungry for more. I recommend this game to anyone looking for a bite sized beat 'em up. I'm eager to see what's next.

a cute beat em up with lots of charm - short but sweet! the bosses are surprisingly challenging as well so learning their move-sets will take you a bit. The sprites and backgrounds are really well done and a big part of the charm. the combat is simple but pretty fun! well worth the price!

It was an okay game. I liked it for the most part but the boss battle against a small dog made me not like the game. I cannot even process how someone thought that was okay. The dog drains my hp immediately and there’s only 1 hp box refill so I have to try and beat the dog with one life. But the dog is inescapable. Eats at your hp and if you do kill it somehow, you then have to face it’s second form. No! The Good Nice art Nice simple beat em up Nice different levels The special attack helped a lot. Somewhat easy game because they leave out hp in every level. After you die and game over, you start right at a checkpoint before the fight. Nice enemy variety. The Bad Couldn’t beat the small dog cause it drains your hp. The game is totally designed for 2 players only. I cannot process how a boss like that is acceptable or why single player doesn’t seem to be tested. I tried multiples times and couldn’t beat the small dog boss. Only saw its second form once. Jumping and attacking feels weird. I would have preferred to use dpad to play the game. Bird enemies are annoying After beating a boss, it becomes dead silent. Bosses have more hp than they needed to be. Story scrolled too fast …
