The Tartarus Key

Got this game for my birthday and I must say, I had a really great time playing through it: The atmosphere is great and the puzzles are really fun. If you thrive for big spooky mansions to explore and have a soft spot for thematic puzzles, then you should really give it a try!

Very neat little game for anyone who likes adventure games with lots of puzzle and a good story Pros: +Variety of puzzle which is not too frustrating, most can be solved by logic and obsevation. Though some can get tedious +Tense atmosphere that can challenge your courage without cheap jumpscare, while there is many life or death situation none of them are timed so you are not rushed and can slowly figure things out +I love the character writing, all of them are distinct without falling into typical horror tropes. Some dialogue got me laughing out loud especially between Alex and William +The story goes into directions not entirely unpredictable but still very interesting Cons: -While I love the overall aesthetic the constantly moving pixels make me feel a little nauseous -I don't know if this is just a me problem but the audio is so low I had to crank up my volume very high to be able to hear the game. I thought there was no background music during the opening part because of this -As much as I love the character writing I wish there were more interaction between them, the other characters barely have screentime after they are saved. Visually very appealing, and overall a short and very enjoyable experience, The Tartarus Key scratches a mistery/horror game itch I did not know I had, since I don't even remember when it was the last time that I had to whip out pen and paper for a videogame.. maybe Penumbra Overture back in 2007. I only have some gripes with the good ending and true ending, which felt all things considered a bit rushed. But overall I would suggest the game to anyone with six spare hours, and I hope the developer delivers more games like this.

Good little PS1-style escape room game. Calling it a horror game is a bit wrong. Its a pure puzzle game. Ending cutscene is a bit silent hill.

Enjoyed the puzzles and the classic style. Short enough to be done in one or two sittings depending on if you get stumped by a puzzle, (which I did by not find ONE piece of paper hidden away in a corner). The possibility of getting your companions killed definitely adds some tension to your puzzle-solving and I enjoyed the little tidbits of dialogue you get with them

I enjoyed this quite a lot! This kind of retro puzzle solving is right up my alley, and I had a great time working through the mansion. This is a relatively short experience that I had a great time going through and 100%ing, so off the bat I will happily recommend it to others. The puzzles themselves are the major mechanical draw, and on the whole they're well-executed and generally on a good level of difficulty, with a lovely added touch of uncertainty to the ones with weightier consequences for failure. There were one or two that I felt were a bit too obtuse, but nothing that detracted too heavily from the experience. The main loop you'll be spending your time executing is solid and you're rewarded for being explorative and curious - my only real complaint on this end is a bit of a lack of optional interactive elements in later puzzles. Early on there's a wealth of these, bits of scenery to poke and prod and hear Alex's thought process and perspective on this macabre situation, but these dry up some as the game goes on and I did feel it.
