Etrian Odyssey II HD

It's difficult <miss> to say <miss> what it is about <miss> Etrian <miss> Odyssey <miss> 2 <miss> that makes me despise <miss> it so much. If you enjoyed reading that opening sentence, know that it's a microcosm of the opening game that only mildly subsides later. Look, I didn't play the original handheld versions, and I've not played later entries where most of the love for this series comes from. I found Etrian Odyssey 1 HD in my general dungeon crawler games search, and while it was certainly flawed, I was charmed by the ability to draw the maps in real time while you played, and generally enjoyed the experience throughout, and since the normal evolution of game series is that the sequel irons out the bugs that crop into the initial entry due to them no longer having to design all the assets/systems from scratch, I had high expectations for this. Turns out Atlas's design mantra is to copy/paste everything that worked in its original creation, only now you climb up the dungeon instead of going down, then take everything that sucked and spray it all over the place ... because that's fun. Right from the get go the opening quest doesn't ask you to explore the initial surroundings…

Like many others say, this is probably the weakest of the mainline titles, and you probably shouldn't play it unless you've played EO1 first. This is not because of plot or anything however, instead it's because the balance and design of the game is very reactive to the first. There are many changes in this game that were, in retrospect, overcorrections to decisions made in the first title. Without getting into specifics, this generally means that the game is very suited for hyper-offense parties, rather than defensive or balanced ones. Far more than perhaps any other game in the franchise. It all depends on your preference whether or not this is for the better. Compared to the first, EO2 only features two new classes: - Beast, a bulky frontliner that can flex between tanking and damage dealing roles. In practice, a class that is too fragile to protect the party and whose damage falls behind the actual damage dealers as the game goes on. - War Magus, a "jack of all trades" supporting class. [b]A Dungeon Crawler sequel for the kids | KAMGUSTA's MINI REVIEW[/b] This is the remastered version of the game released in 2008 for Nintendo DS, and sequel to the first "Etrian Odyssey". It's a simple dungeon crawler similar to "Dungeon Master", "Eye of the Beholder", "Wizardry" or the newer "Legend of Grimrock", with a first person perspective and a grid-based exploration. Unlike those, it has a Japanese/Anime style and a special section on the screen where you can draw your own map (not so easy with a joypad). Combat is turn based, similar to classic JRPGs. To those who say it's quite difficult, that is true only if you play on "normal", but you can simply select a lower difficulty and it becomes easy / very easy. I didn't like the "colorful" and "childish" style, the simple mechanics (it's a DS port...), the JRPG gameplay (out of place) and, worst of all, not being able to see your party (you'll forget to have it). I'd recommend it only to fans of JRPGs searching for something a little different. FOE's not giving xp was annoying but it was a good game otherwise.

Definitely the weakest of the original 3 but despite that i still love all these games. Different from the first given the balance adjustments to make most defensive options weaker, and weaker classes from the original game rediculously overpowered, while also nerfing the best offensive classes from the first game into the ground. This does open you up to the Newer Gunner and War Magus class and the weaker classes from the first game being stronger in comparison. On the exploration side, it was an interesting choice to take exp away from FOE fights... which basically gives you no reason to fight them outside of getting their mats for gear (which i actually forgot to go back and beat some after i was strong enough to do so). Despite that, what you get from selling them is either already weaker then what is available, or will be very soon so you are really just doing it for 100%. Money and exp also seems tight until you realize that you can just back farm the bosses on respawn for 1-3 levels of exp each, and a conditional that sells for 30k every time. Soon as i remembered that, i went from feeling poor to having more then i could need. For trash mobs, there isnt much in the ways …

like the first game, its challenging but fun, playing with classes + teams is a blast and finishing the maps for the floors is satisfying!!! also floor 23 in this game ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sucks i hate it it made me wanna commit die. other than that tho i had lotsa fun with this game
