About Ys Origin
Ascend the demon-infested Devil's Tower as one of three playable characters in this arcade-style action RPG that blends fast-paced combat, platforming, and Metroidvania exploration across a mysterious vertical dungeon. Fight screen-filling bosses with intricate AI, solve inventive puzzles, and uncover the story of the Goddesses' disappearance across multiple branching narratives and unlockable modes.
One day, amidst this turmoil, the Goddesses stole away into the night, vanishing from Ys altogether. And there's only one place they could have gone: the Devil's Tower.
A search party of knights and sorcerers was hastily formed and dispatched to the surface in hopes of retrieving these runaway deities. Among its members were apprentice knight Yunica Tovah and troubled sorcerer Hugo Fact.
This is their story. Or at least, it's how each of them remembers it.
Expanding upon the gameplay elements introduced in Ys: The Ark of Napishtim and further developed in Ys: The Oath in Felghana, Ys Origin perfects the formula by adding different styles of play and new features never before seen in the Ys universe. Best described as an arcade-like platformer RPG with Metroidvania elements and a complex, multi-faceted narrative, Ys Origin is the perfect mix of action, exploration and story. (transferred a save from another install. for first playthrough im doing yunica on nightmare, about 3/4 done.) I actually left a negative review for Oath In Felghana some years ago, which I've privated now since I don't agree with a good deal of what I said. Part of my negative impression was because I didn't understand something that's also true of this game: LEVELS ARE MANDATORY. This isn't kingdom hearts 2, there's no scaling. If you don't match a bosses level, it might as well be unplayable. Upgrades are also mandatory, weapon ore especially. This game likes to frame mandatory items as rewards off the beaten path. If you get walled by a boss HP bar, you either missed a chest, or you're under-levelled. The game is hard but it's not that hard. That being said, out of the Ys games I've played this is the first one I've clicked with and handily the best, and the best to start with. (It's pronounced 'niece' without the n.) It cuts almost all the fluff, and keeps a sharp focus on fundies combat through a tightly paced gauntlet of consistently interesting enemy, encounter and arena design. AN addictive hack and slash. play one charecter for 12 hours then come backand beat it with another charecter after a few games. good tunage . i can see myself coming back to this yearly. As with many of the shorther Ys games its a fun palette cleanser.1 found this helpful
