Ys Origin

Picked it up on sale, it was my introduction into Ys. Reminded me a lot of a topdown Zelda experience, fluid combat and boss fights were pretty sick, music was fantastic to the point where it gets stuck in your head at times haha. It's a shorter game 8~10 hours per story, I'm thankful I went with Yunica's story first as it was quite endearing, the melee gameplay style was quite a bit more enjoyable and her skills were just cooler so it hooked me in a fair bit more than Hugo's at the very beginning which got A LOT better as the game went on. Difficulty wise I played on Normal mode which did hand me a new one if I went into bosses underleveled, so if you're struggling with a fight and you're not getting anywhere you are incentivised to level up once or twice to actually meet the bosses' level. This did lead me to looking up the upcoming boss levels so I didn't overlevel them as I got to them to keep the experience more on the challenging side which I enjoyed personally. TLDR: If you want a good hack and slash game with a decent story, good music and replayability pick it up you won't regret it because I sure didn't. Haha Yunica go Spiiiinnnnnn Play this game its really fun 10/10

Ys Origin explores 700 years before the event of the first Ys game. It's mechanics are simple and quite entertaining, offering three different routes to get the full picture of the story. For those who played both Ys I & II, this game is a great origin story.

It's funny I've played 3 "zelda-like" action games back to back and they were all great and although similar from a high level, very different in how they felt. Ys Origin is the "crunchiest" of the 3 and most likely due to its age, but it's straight forward in its approach and I think that's why its so enjoyable. It's responsive and you feel strong mowing through mobs like it's nothing. The tower is designed really well and feels like a lot of thought went into the puzzles at each section; the backtracking always feel great and keeping things in tower segments makes it never feel like a pain. I will say the 3 required playthroughs to get the actual ending and canon route is interesting and definitely a product of older game design, especially given they are identical in gameplay. It was nice being able to breeze through it on very easy but still it wasn't the most engaging. The 3 perspectives was neat but it left me scratching my head as they all differed a bit in the events that played out, versus it just being 3 different POVs on the same events. My First YS game, it was okey Its hard to get used to the keyboard controls at start unless you use a controller. Oh yea and you can't skip dialouges and cutscenes (this Is annoying if you die withouht a checkpoint or forget to save) If you like hard challenge, and action Rpg, and VERY but like VERY VERY hard boss fights, then its your game But It wasn't mine 5.5/10 (not finished/gave up)
