12 Memory Lane

I absolutely loved this game. One of my favorite details was how objects would subtly change their appearance, or how walking upstairs would somehow bring you back downstairs. At first I genuinely thought I was losing my mind, but then I realized exactly what the game was trying to achieve—and it absolutely succeeded. It does an incredible job of making you experience what it's like to [spoiler]live with Alzheimer's[/spoiler]. I also really appreciated the story. It builds up at a great pace, slowly revealing more and more until everything falls into place. By the time I reached the ending and discovered that [spoiler]his sister, who struggled with addiction and kept relapsing, died in a car accident after he had essentially sent her away from the Christmas gathering,[/spoiler] I completely broke down. I cried so hard that my mom came to check on me because she thought something terrible had happened. In a way... it had. Overall, this is an amazing game. It's thoughtful, emotional, and incredibly well-crafted. It deserves all the recognition and praise it can get. Highly recommended.

This is a very bog standard walking sim, and I mean that in a positive way. The environment that you are exploring is small but feels lived-in and realistic. Likewise, as is the case with many great walking sims of this kind, you come to know a cast of characters that the player will never actually meet, all through notes and voice messages and environmental storytelling. It is effective. The gameplay elements are light; you are essentially trying to match reality up with the clues left behind in your journal as a representation of the struggles faced by people suffering from chronic memory loss and dementia. To even try and depict this kind of turmoil in a video game is a noble goal, and I think that they did an admirable job. However, there is a massive lack of consequence for getting things wrong. In each chapter, you have a number of items in the house that you need to change to match what is hinted at in your journal and in the environment. You cannot proceed until all of the items are matched up correctly, and it does not tell you which ones you have gotten right or wrong; it only tells you how many right or wrong you have. Nice short game. I like how it looks. The puzzles were intuitive, if not the most intuitive I played, but good. The story is interesting, even if it was a little complicated for me to understand what was the whole picture. I feel like a little more context would have fix that, but the game works perfectly as it is.

This is an amazing free game. It has not only a beautiful atmosphere, but also a deeply poignant mystery and a central theme that's wonderfully woven into both the story and the gameplay. It's a real success all around. I can't recommend it enough!
