The Jail is a narrative-driven point-and-click adventure that players appreciate for its intriguing story, engaging characters, bold adult themes, and satisfying twist ending, with a reasonable playtime of 3-4 hours. However, players note that the game suffers from unclear objective markers, excessive backtracking, inconsistent puzzle design with a notably awkward final chapter, and optional content that's easy to miss, making some achievements difficult to obtain without guides.
This is a single dev's first game, so I have to give it a thumbs up, but the game is kinda boring. It is mostly talking with everybody to progress, and not many puzzles. The character can't run, so walking back and forth is just boring, and talking is boring. The vibe is missing. 44 The Jail is an interesting narrative adventure game with its pros and cons. It has inventory items and dialog trees but almost no puzzles. Mostly we just need to figure out where to go next or which NPC to talk to. Generally the gameplay is smooth and immersive, but there are some moments where the game could give a better indication of what the next objective is or make it clearer whether or not there are any optional tasks left. The last chapter suddenly introduces some very contrived puzzles, very unnecessary pop-culture references and in-jokes, and quite a few objects which I wasn't able to do anything with. At the same time, I was carrying many items which turned out to have no use. It seems that too much stuff was made optional, and many interactions are easy to miss. So it's possible that I missed some important connections, but I found most of the story implausible and the motivations for the characters' actions unconvincing. The game has only a small number of locations, and the location design is not especially elaborate, but overall the graphics and animations are quite nice. The English translation is not very good. Other than that, there are only some minor techn…1 found this helpful
Very good game, with an interesting little twist at the end. I wouldn’t call it a “horror”game really, although I did jump a couple of times, lol. I rather enjoyed the retro pixel art style too, and the fact that it wasn’t full of tons of frustrating puzzles was a bonus for me, It probably took me about 3-4 hours to complete the whole game, and because of that, the price is very reasonable. Maybe one teeny little criticism is that I wish there had been an option to increase the walking speed, as there is quite a bit of backtracking back & forth during most of the game…but not really a big deal as it were, Definitely worth playing! I’d love to see what this Dev comes up with next…!1 found this helpful
A fun and interesting thriller! The graphics are functional but the character writing really shines though.
This was better than expected and pulled me in. I wonder if the dev is an avid manga reader, because I got the impression that it might be partly inspired by some titles I read. Yes, its clunky in some ways and one notices its an early work of an indie dev. But this just added some charm and didnt bother me at all. Thats also a reason why its better than other more polished titles, because its more bold, creative and doesnt shy away from adult themes, which is greatly appreciated. I also like the ending, which is rare for me. It bothers me a bit that I wont be able to get the last two achievements, because I cant guess what to do and trial and error would take ages with multiple playthroughs probably. But thats fine. If there would be a guide I wouldve just followed that and that ruins the fun of discovery. Great game! Please keep making games.
hidden gem of a point and click, loved the ending twist
