This turn-based JRPG was a huge surprise for me. It executes everything it sets out to do extremely well. I wasn’t expecting the game’s art direction to capture the charm of classic 16-bit Final Fantasy titles so beautifully, but it absolutely does. The characters are well thought out, and their personalities clash in interesting ways that make the party dynamic feel natural. The main story also ties in nicely with both the protagonists and the NPCs you meet along the way. Even the music, presented in 8-bit form, is incredibly well made and fits the gameplay perfectly. As for the gameplay, it blends classic turn-based mechanics from older Final Fantasy games with mechanics commonly seen in JRPGs you see today. Each character has their own MP/AP resources, unique abilities, and passives, which really gives them strong identities in battle. Another great feature is there are no random encounters, enemies are visible in dungeons and on the world map, so you can choose whether to fight or avoid them. Overall, 8-Bit Adventures 2 left a fantastic impression on me.
